    For some context, I'm a middle aged sax player with about 10 years of playing experience. I do spend a moderate amount of my music practice/studies on understanding jazz theory and how it relates to whatever I'm playing. I do not, however, have specific arranging experience or a formal music ed background. I felt like this book was very accessible at my level but you should be comfortable with chord symbols and knowing how different chords are constructed along with how some common progressions function to really benefit from the book.

    The book starts with a section discussing playable range and "sweet spot" range for alto, tenor, and bari sax as well as trumpet and trombone. As a woodwind musician, it's helpful to have some of those details for trumpet and trombone in one spot. Also having played some music where it felt like the arranger had never played a sax it's good to see saxophones covered in this section too!

    After the preliminaries, the book covers close voicing in varying numbers of parts and then moves on to drop2/drop4 voicings. The author also discusses various ways a horn section can function from adding fills to guide tone passages and affecting the intensity of a piece. Throughout the book there are audio examples which are quite helpful to really demonstrate the ideas being written about.

    This is a fairly quick read and the examples are largely drawn from one piece of music. This is both a pro and a con. There is plenty of opportunity to spend a lot of time writing some arrangements where some of the different concepts are explicitly incorporated but it's nice to read something that is not just totally overwhelming. On the other hand it might have been nice to have several example pieces from differing styles of music broken down and analyzed or perhaps even a "homework" list of recordings to transcribe and analyze to see how the principles are applied.

    All in all, I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in doing some arranging either as a composer or as a sax/trumpet/trombone player looking to add more to music you may already be playing.

    Très content de l'achat. Il y a une mécanique très logique dans l'arrangement des horns qui est très simple à suivre et très bien expliquée dans ce livre. J'avais vu d'autres livres sur le sujet où il parlaient de four way close double lead, et je comprenais très vaguement ce que c'était mais c'était abstrait. Avec ce livre, c'est concret, et pour peu qu'on pratique un peu ce qu'il dit, on comprend comment arranger les cuivres. Je dis ça parce que j'ai acheté la version kindle de ce livre aujourd'hui et jusqu'à présent je n'ai jamais su comment arranger les cuivres, et là j'avais un projet reggae où j'avais besoin de cuivres (d'où l'achat du livre), et en une journée, j'ai pu survoler le livre et lire les passages qui m'intéressaient et arranger mon projet, tout ça en quelques heures, et maintenant, je sais arranger les cuivres jusqu'à la fin de ma vie, donc pour 16€ c'est plutôt kool :)

    Metodo per arrangiare le parti degli strumenti a fiato in un gruppo musicale.

    Sono presenti varie tipologie di sezioni di fiati (big-band, quintetti di ottoni/ance, combo di 3/5 fiati, ecc.).

    Anche se ricalca un po' le preferenze dell'autore, è comunque un valido riferimento per la stesura di arrangiamenti con voicing articolate e dispiegate. Consigliato agli addetti ai lavori.

    Arranging for Horns was a very good review for me. I am currently faced with arranging for smaller groups with four or fewer horns. This book helped to deal with instrument voicing and timbre that influence counter melody and vertical ensemble movement. This book may be advanced for the beginner to grasp - but it explains everything well and would help novice arrangers to get started. As advertised - it does what it is supposed to do. Teach! Jerry Gates wrote a great book.
