This classic book is a systematic exposition of general topology. It is especially intended as background for modern analysis. Based on lectures given at the University of Chicago, the University of California and Tulane University, this book is intended to be a reference and a text. As a reference work, it offers a reasonably complete coverage of the area, and this has resulted in a more extended treatment than would normally be given in a course. As a text, however, the exposition in the eariler chapters proceeds at a more pedestrian pace. A preliminary chapter covers those topics requisite to the main body of work.

    今から、４０年以上前、数学科に在学中のテキストだった。コルモゴロフの「函数解析の基礎」の翻訳が出たばかりで、さらに勉強するテキストであった。記述がやさしい部分から、難しい問題へと書き方が巧妙であった。

    日本の学者では表現できない導入方法に感銘を受けた。久しぶりで読み返してみると､当時の新鮮さは失われていない。やはり数学の名著の一つと言えるだろう。

    If you want an easier text, then I highly recommend the first half of Kolmogorov and Fomin, Introductory Real Analysis. It was my first introduction to topology and is still the best one that i know of. However, if you want to really appreciate point set topology, there is none better than this book by Kelley. It is what should be read after Kolmogorov.

    I have no problems with the contents of the book : Kelley's book is very , very good . However, this hardback edition from Hassell Street Press is a disgrace . The overall quality of this hardback leads me to the opinion that it's best not to use it to read this very good work but to put it in the toilet , tear out the pages and wipe your arse on them as and when the need arises. Hassell - should that be Hassle - have just taken a very poorly looked-after library copy of this books ( there are lots of underscoring and writing in margins etc ) and made a very bad photo copy of the whole book . The whole production smacks of something someone has produced in their back bedroom . To sum up , get the Dover paperback . Avoid,avoid this hardback
