Can't Shoot Whiskey: Enemies to lovers second chance veterinary romance Kindle Edition
Our revenge game? Legendary.
Until I left for college and swore I’d never look back.
But life doesn’t care about vows made in the dark.
When my father dies unexpectedly, I’m dragged back to the hometown I outgrew, handed guardianship of my grieving kid brother, and forced to take over my father’s struggling veterinary clinic.
And waiting for me—like karma with a smirk—is Josh.
Not as a memory.
Not as a ghost.
But as my new business partner.
Avoiding him? Impossible.
Forgetting what we were? Laughable.
He still looks at me like I’m his. Like we’re a story paused instead of over. Like one spark is all it would take.
And God help me, the spark is still there.
But we don’t do soft. We don’t do safe.
We do oil and fire. War and wreckage.
Whatever we once were—
Whatever we still could be—
We’re enemies.
And this time, nobody’s walking away unburned.

Josh and Erika
Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2026Let's do a quick recap.
Josh and Erika are lifelong friends....they have loved each other since childhood. They dated in high school until Josh all of a sudden kissed another girl and got caught. Then the "war" began. Erika made him pay with a series of "pranks". Then she left for college. Her dad was upset that she didn't go where he wanted her to and stopped talking to her. She hasn't been home in years. Meanwhile Josh didn't take over the family farm, he became a veterinarian and went into business with Erika's dad.
Fast forward. Erika is back in town because her father and step-mom were killed in a car accident, leaving Erika the guardian of her little brother Vinny.
And because nothing is simple she has to stay at least for a little while to settle her dad's affairs and get to know her little brother.
Oil and water might describe Josh and Erika but I think fire and gasoline actually fit better. These two are at each others throats from minute one. I thought at one point they'd either end up in bed or kill each other.
It's not so much about the steam with this book....it's the relationships and the way Erika gets help from unexpected places. She came home because she had to...hopefully she'll stay because she wants to.
Oh and it's Vinny...I love this kid. He pulls no punches but he's not too bratty. He's scared to death and I couldn't blame him....he's a scene stealer.
We get some scary action that I didn't see coming and I have to admit I was a little worried there for a bit.
Miss Zoe...this my first time reading your work....Well done sister! Can't wait to read more!!

Fast-Paced, Romantic, and A Little Bit Thrilling
Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2026*Can’t Shoot Whiskey* by Zoe Forward is such a fun, adventurous romance it has this great mix of action, humor, and emotional depth that makes it really stand out. From the start, it pulls you into a story that feels a little wild and unpredictable in the best way, with just enough danger and excitement to keep things moving while still delivering those heartfelt character moments.
Josh is such a great lead. He has that rugged, capable energy someone who clearly knows how to handle himself in high pressure situations but there’s also a laid-back charm to him that makes him really likable. He’s not just tough for the sake of it; there’s a warmth and protectiveness that shows through, especially in how he interacts with Erika. As the story goes on, you get to see more of his emotional side, which adds depth and makes his character feel well-rounded.
Erika is such a standout. She’s smart, determined, and not at all out of her depth, even when things get chaotic. I loved how she holds her own and doesn’t just rely on Josh she brings her own strength and perspective into every situation. There's a curiosity and resilience to her that makes her really engaging to follow, and her reactions often add a touch of humor that keeps the tone balanced.
The dynamic between Josh and Erika is where the book really shines. Their chemistry is full of spark there’s tension, banter, and that sense of two very different personalities learning to trust each other. The mix of adventure and romance makes their connection feel even more intense, and as they grow closer, it feels both exciting and emotionally satisfying. Overall, it’s such an entertaining read perfect if you want something fast-paced, romantic, and just a little bit thrilling.

Emotional Second Chance Small Town Romance
Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2026This is such an unusual second chance, small town romance and I couldn’t stop turning the pages late into the night! Josh Hurst protected Erika Chomping since they’ve known each other in the third grade. They both dealt with extreme grief at a young age and were always comforting to each other. In their teens, they started dating and were wildly in love until Josh betrayed her just before senior prom. Erika took revenge on him and thus began their ‘enemies’ phase that takes us to present date. Erika left their small town in Vision, NC to attend college and took a job after graduation as an emergency veterinarian in the city and never returned to visit. Josh remained in Vision and became a veterinarian for both small animals and large farm animals.
Erika’s estranged father and stepmother die suddenly in a car crash and Erika comes back to town. She learns that she is now the sole guardian for her eight-year-old stepbrother Vinnie, and she’s inherited half of her father’s veterinarian practice and all of his debt. The other half of the vet practice is owned by her nemesis, Josh. Plus, she owes Josh for the debt that her father incurred. This throws the former lovers, now enemies, back into close proximity and tempers fly! Erika, an extremely talented emergency vet surgeon, has to work at Josh’s vet practice and the animals they treat provide heartwarming intrigue to the story. There are several villains that also keep the plot exciting right up until the thrilling conclusion.

Whiskey and his lifeline...
Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2026This is such a great story about how life is altered when things are not clear. Erika and Josh story is heartfelt, a rollercoaster of emotions that can make or break your spirit, its how futures are changed in an instant, its about miscommunication, betrayal, and how your decisions affect all around you. I loved how strong, determined, loyal and problem solver Erika is, even from estranged father and when all hope is lost. Erika always finds a way to overcome issues even when she discovers she's now the new guardian of her half younger brother shed never met and co-owns her father's vet clinic with man who broke her heart a decade ago, all while navigating a crazed ex, a high school bully and new debt. Josh is such a train wreck in this story, one fatal accident changed his entire life that became a ripple effect of the rest of his journey. I loved how much both Erika and Josh grow in this story, how true love always prevails and how when your real soulmate makes you whole once found. It's a story of true emotions, an instant forever kind of love that can survive through the worst of pains and worst life throws, it's a journey of friendship and small-town drama. I loved this story and would have given it a higher rating if not for a few minor errors. I loved the small-town vibe, spicy banter and how Zoe Forward was able to dredge up raw emotions, as well as sexy moments. All the animals were adorable and so sweet. I received ARC for voluntary review.
