- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2024I bought the Everdrive GG X7 for my Game Gear, and it is an amazing alternative to finding most Game Gear cartridges which can be very expensive, especially for the rare games.
Setup is easy to do, and it plays like a dream.
In addition to Game Gear, you can also play most Master System and Sega SG-1000 games, which is nice since the SG-1000 didn't get a chance to shine in the United States as it was only in Japan and Australia.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2024Use and setup is extremely easy with any real computer skills and willingness to do a little work. Given that the games from this era that had a battery save have a high likelihood to not save at this point, having a Everdrive is a great way to still be able to enjoy them. Additionally the option to try a game before tracking a physical copy down for a real system, or if you're a collector leave the valuable physical copies on your shelf etc instead of constantly moving them helps preserve the condition of them.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2024Product is simple to use, instructions are straightforward from the manufacturers site and works perfectly!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2021This is the Everdrive to get for Gamegear, haven't had any issues with it like I did for the other cheaper Everdrive I had gotten.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2021Got this for Save state feature but many games don’t run at all. Those same games work on the original version. Customer support said I could exchange it but never provided instructions where to send use and stopped responding to emails
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2021If you own a Game Gear, are interested in it, or plan on getting one, you owe it to yourself to grab the EverDrive GG X7. It's hands down the best flashcart for the system. Everything else is practically the beta to this release. It plays previously unplayable games like Gunstar Heroes, allows save states, plays Master System games, homebrew, and so much more. This has allowed me to try out many games and progress farther than I would have due to the lack of in-game saving for most titles (some exceptions include Shining Force for instance). So far I have completed Shinobi II, Sonic Triple Trouble, Battletoads, Streets of Rage, Ristar, Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, Aladdin, Space Harrier, and am nearly done with Shining Force II- all without any issues aside from a game crash during after going into the in-game menu too many times in Shinobi II.
In addition to running great on original hardware, it also works surprisingly better on the Mega SG console from Analogue. Sometimes save states can be a little flaky when going back to the in-game menu on the Game Gear (mainly a limitation of the hardware/game at times), but the Mega SG doesn't seem to have nearly as many issues with it on the same game such as Samurai Shodown. I haven't had a single compatibility issue. The only difference is that if you run Master System games or Game Gear games that run in that mode, it will incorrectly display the games. Pressing reset on the console will boot the game into the correct core.
This flashcart has allowed me to expand my appreciation for the Sega Game Gear like I never had before randomly playing emulation on a plethora of devices. There is something about playing it on official hardware or the Mega SG console (practically 1:1 console hardware) that makes you feel like a kid again with that authenticity. With many of the games becoming rare or more expensive, it has helped me filter out which games I wanted to collect and really care for on the side. For instance, I know Space Harrier on the Game Gear is by far not the best version of the game, but because of this experience I became a huge fan.
Overall, it's a no-brainer to pick up this device. There is something about 8-bit charm that has grabbed my nostalgic heart; I'm grateful this device was created so I could give this system from my childhood another chance.
Some must play games:
1. Sonic Triple Trouble (best Sonic game on the Game Gear hands down, like an 8-bit Sonic 4)
2. Ristar (an amazing port with its own charm)
3. Shinobi II (this is what I wish the Genesis games evolved into)
4. Aleste II (a top notch shooter)
5. Shining Force II: The Sword Of Hajya (one of the best games on the system, turn based strategy)
6. Sylvan Tale (you'll need the translation patch, a zelda like experience)
7. Castle of Illusion (different and perhaps better than the Genesis version)
8. Vampire Master of Darkness (Castlevania clone, fun stuff)
9. Tail's Adventure (t's a Metroidvania and overall excellent)
10. Space Harrier (an 8-bit take of the arcade classic. It has it's faults, but the music is charming and it's addicting)
