About the Author
Mark Littmann teaches science writing at the University of Tennessee, where he holds three distinguished professorships. Mark received a B.S. in chemistry and literature at MIT, an M.A. in creative writing at Hollins College, and a Ph.D. in English at Northwestern University. Mark's books about solar eclipses, giant meteor storms, Halley's Comet, and the discovery of the outer planets have won four national awards. Mark's plays include Halley and Newton, how Edmond Halley made Isaac Newton famous, and Little Lessons for Lina, about Caroline Herschel, the first woman professional astronomer. Before coming to the University of Tennessee in 1991, Mark taught astronomy at Loyola College in Maryland and the University of Utah. In Salt Lake City, he directed the Hansen Planetarium from 1965 to 1983. He wrote and produced 35 planetarium programs, some still performed worldwide. Fred Espenak is the most widely recognized name in solar eclipses. He is an astrophysicist emeritus at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, where he published over a dozen book on solar eclipses. His Five Millennium Canons of solar and lunar eclipses are seminal works for researchers, archaeologists, and historians. Fred writes regularly on eclipses and is well known for his eclipse photography. His image of the 2006 eclipse was featured on a U.S. postage stamp to commemorate the 2017 eclipse. He leads expeditions for solar eclipses around the world and has done so for over 40 years. The International Astronomical Union honored Fred and his eclipse work by naming Asteroid 14120 after him.

Fred Espenak is a retired astrophysicist from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center where he became NASA's expert on solar and lunar eclipse predictions.
Known by the nickname "Mr. Eclipse", he is co-author of the popular book "Totality - The Great North American Eclipse of 2024." He also wrote 13 NASA eclipse bulletins, each focusing on a major eclipse. In 2014, Espenak published the comprehensive "Thousand Year Canon of Solar Eclipses: 1501 to 2500" and the complementary volume "Thousand Year Canon of Lunar Eclipses: 1501 to 2500." His publication "21st Century Canon of Solar Eclipses" is an essential guide to all eclipses of the Sun during this Century.
Espenak's MrEclipse dot com website focuses on eclipse photography while the EclipseWise dot com website is devoted to the dissemination of his latest eclipse predictions. An avid eclipse chaser, he has participated in dozens of eclipse expeditions around the world including remote locations such as Mongolia, Libya, the Bolivian altiplano, Kenya’s Lake Turkana and Antarctica. His enthusiasm for eclipses spills over into public speaking, and he frequently gives talks about his favorite subject.
The International Astronomical Union has honored him by naming an asteroid “Espenak.” To commemorate the 2017 total eclipse through the USA, the U. S. Postal Service featured one of his eclipse photos on a unique heat-sensitive postage stamp. Now living in rural Arizona, he spends most clear nights losing sleep and photographing the stars from Bifrost and Dark View Observatories.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2024Format: PaperbackTHANK YOU, Mark Littmann & Fred Espenak for this fantastic book.
I have learned much from Fred's GreatAmericanEclipse.com and, foolishly, thought I knew all that I needed to know about eclipses. This book shows I still had much to learn.
The book is informative and easy to read and understand, sharing basic and advanced concepts in ways we can readily understand.
For me, I have been looking for videos showing the geometry of eclipses, so I can see how the movement of the moon relative to our Earth and the sun change the shapes / paths of eclipses. Mark & Fred provided a text-based version that has me imagining that motion quite accurately... so insightful.
Each chapter includes a story of a person's eclipse experiences, the good and the bad - they are insightful.
This book even included the weather forecast for the entire path, from the Pacific Ocean through Mexico, the US and Canada and out into the Atlantic - helpful. Blessedly, the clouds forecast for central Ohio the night before remained high and did not obscure the eclipse.
The book also contains wonderful photos, maps of past and present eclipses, and guides for future total solar eclipses... and a history of our understanding of the sun and helium and related sciences.
WELL DONE!
Get this book, even if it is now after the April 8 eclipse, and read and enjoy and share its insights with others!
Thanks,
Mike
