He shouldn’t touch her.

Nell Fairchild knows how to survive. How to stay quiet, stay invisible, keep the worst parts of herself hidden. She’s good at it.

She’s not good at Darius Hawke.

Her father’s oldest friend. A war photographer with a dangerous past, a talent for disappearing, and eyes that see far too much.

Darius knows better than to want Nell. She’s too young, too vulnerable, and completely off-limits. He’s spent a lifetime navigating war zones, captivity, and the darkest corners of human nature. The last thing he should do is drag his best friend’s daughter into his shadows.

But some lines were made to be crossed.

And when Darius takes a temporary teaching job at Nell’s high school, staying away isn’t an option. She’s everywhere — too close, too tempting, too determined to draw him out of the darkness. And the more he resists, the hotter the tension between them burns.

If they give in, there’s no coming back.

It started out strong, and I did enjoy it. Their shared trauma was a good bonding moment, but Nell became a bit too teenager-y and love struck over Darius for my liking.

It was good, but I don't think I'll be reading the others in the trilogy.

If you've read Nina Lane before, you already know from her Spiral of Bliss series that she is the master of forbidden romantic relationships. Sparrow and Hawke does not disappoint
This beautifully written story of Nell Fairchild and Darius Hawke is about innocent love and trust that began when she was a young girl. Nell grew up with a troubled mother and a loving but slightly over-protective father which made it difficult for her at school with all the whispering going on. Nell has no real friends so she spends much of her time alone in her room getting lost in her thoughts, drawing becomes her outlet. What started as an innocent, loving, caring relationship when she was very young, develops into so much more for Nell as she becomes an adult. The two have a special bond that cannot be denied no matter how hard Darius tries to fight it. The first book is just the beginning of what promises to be a complex and emotional love story. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next in the series.

Book 1 in the Birdsong trilogy was a thrilling and intense story and introduction to Nell and Darius. These two have endured so much trauma and emotional turmoil that they form a connection that slowly turns into more.

There’s a huge age gap. Twenty two years. He’s her father’s close friend. The evolution of these two individuals is slow but there’s a certain progression. It has to be in order for me to believe in not only the story but also in them as a couple. At times it’s too slow but Nell and Darius is worth it. How they go from strangers to forming a deep emotional connection was beautifully written. I felt the shift between them and all the intense and scary thoughts especially Darius wrestle with.

They both change each other’s lives irrevocably but the fear of their deep emotional connection is a constant. Especially for Darius who has a lot of inner demons to fight. Nell and Darius are flawed and lost but thanks to one another they’re slowly rediscovering themselves again.
Sparrow & Hawke was only the beginning and what a fabulous one this was. So excited for what’s to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic trilogy!!!

Nina Lane is a new-to-me author. This story - told over three books - was everything I would hope for, but not too much of any one thing. Steamy love scenes, but not oversaturation. Heartbreak, but reality of the situation (but rest assured, there IS a HEA). Intrigue and suspense, I couldn’t put book three down. The transformation/coming of age for the FMC was a beautiful thing, and the practical and emotional battle within the MMC was very believable and well-written. I admit, I had a bit of a book hangover after this one!
