Sasha Savvy Loves to Code Hardcover – June 2, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
Sasha Savvy Loves to Code is an early reader chapter book (ages 7-10). The main character, Sasha Savvy, is a super smart 10-year old African-American girl, who lives in Washington, DC. Sasha must choose which class to take for summer camp. Her mom discovers that the camp is offering a new class for girls on how to code. Sasha thinks this will be boring and doesn't believe that she is good at computer stuff. Despite this, she decides to give it a chance and convinces her best friends Gabby Reyes and Ashley Webster, to attend the coding camp with her. Sasha's mom, a Software Developer, gives her a unique formula to help her remember how to code but will it be enough to get her through a challenging first day of camp with bugs everywhere, computing errors, that is.

Just right for young minds
Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2017TL;DR: Buy this book for you children, or someone else's children. They will enjoy it.
Ms. Alston has done a great job with this book. I personally have not read it yet, as the moment it arrived, my 8 year old son disappeared with it. It arrived on a Thursday, and he finished it at school the next day. It didn't look like a super short book, so I took that as evidence that it was very interesting to him, and written at a level that didn't bore him and wasn't too advanced. His only gripe? That it was too short and left him wanting to know more about what happens next! When he finished, he started reading it out loud to his 6 year old brother, and both of them have commented on different occasions about it, and seem to have enjoyed it. I have seen the other reviews here, and while I can't comment specifically on them yet (I plan to update this review after I read it myself), this book was exactly what I was hoping for. For what it's worth, my 2 boys don't fit into the sadly underrepresented demographics in coding, tech, and STEM, but they never felt like the book "wasn't for them."
I bought this book in part to support this young author and her efforts to increase STEM awareness for young women and minorities. I've heard there are more "Sasha Savvy" books in the works, and I'm excited to see them as well. In my opinion, STEM, and in particular coding, are super important for our collective future, and we need to do more to cultivate interest in all of our young ones. It's hard to say if this book made a particular impact on my sons as I have already been working to get them interested in coding.

What a privilege to share this book with my daughter
Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2017I wish that I had owned this book growing up. It might have made my path into software engineering a little easier. However, it is such a joy to share this wonderful book with my daughter who will have the benefit of growing up in a world where she can see computer scientists that look like her. The story itself makes coding accessible to young audiences in a powerful way by explaining problem solving principles that are important for kids to understand. I highly recommend purchasing a few copies and handing out a few young ladies in your life.

Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2017This is a great story. Very excited for the young author who thought this up. I bought it to read with our kids, then will be donating it to our school library, because young girls need to be exposed to role models and characters that look like them. I gave it four stars instead of five because of the lack of editing/proofreading, big disappointment on that - lots of typos, punctuation missing/messed up throughout. Hopefully a second edition will come out with corrections. Then I'll buy that one, too! We need more books like this out there!

really enjoyed the book
Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2017Both of our daughters, Samara (12 yrs old) & Victoria (8 yrs old), really enjoyed the book! Samara, who loves coding, learned about some languages (html & java) that she hadn't heard of. Victoria learned that girls can do anything they put they're mind to. Great job, Sasha!

Diverse books matter!
Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2018I think every 5th grade girl I teach has borrowed this book! Representation matters and I am honored to put this story into the hands of my students. My only complaint is that there isn’t a sequel!
