Troublemaker Audio CD – Audiobook, July 26, 2011
Purchase options and add-ons
Clayton Hensley is accustomed to trouble: There’s a folder of incident reports in Principal Kelling’s office that’s as thick as a phonebook and growing daily. Most recently, Clay’s art teacher told the class to spend the period drawing anything they wanted, and Clay decided to be extra “creative” by drawing a spot-on portrait of Principal Kelling…as a donkey.
It’s a pretty funny joke, but Clay is coming to realize that the biggest joke of all may be on him. When his big brother, Mitchell, gets in some serious trouble, Clay decides to change his own mischief-making ways…but he can’t seem to shake his reputation as a troublemaker.
From the master of the school story comes a book about the fine line between good-humored mischief and dangerous behavior—and how everyday choices can close or open doors.

About the author

Most of my characters are fairly normal people who are dealing with the basics of everyday life--getting along with others, finding a place in the world, discovering talents, overcoming challenges, trying to have some wholesome fun along the way, and getting into some scrapes and a little mischief now and then, too. I guess I hope my readers will be able to see bits and pieces of themselves in the stories, particularly the novels that take place in and around school. School is a rich setting because schools and education are at the heart of every community. The stories that are set in school seem to resonate with kids, teachers, parents, librarians--readers of all ages. Everyone's life has been touched by school experiences. And I also hope, of course, that kids and others will enjoy reading, enjoy the use of language, enjoy my storytelling.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseAndrew Clements speaks to 4th and 5th graders unlike any other author we have read. His books are entertaining and funny, but also have interesting facts and/or moral values. I am definitely enjoying reading his books with my 4th grader!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really liked this book and I thought it was great. It has one bad word in it, but that doesn't make it inappropriate. Andrew Clements writes great books and this was one of his best.
Clay Hensley is an interesting kid. He likes to get sent to the principals office, and he has a big growing folder of all the times he gets in trouble. Ms. Ormin is the secretary, and she says that Clay's folder is her masterpiece.
When Clay is at art class, the teacher says they can draw anything they want to. So when Clay decides to draw a donkey that looks like the principal. And afterhis older brother Mitch comes home and sees it, everything goes wrongg.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2011Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseOne of the things that I especially love about working at an elementary school is the variety of children I get to meet. This can be both enjoyable and incredibly frustrating, but never boring, and I learn as much from them as they do from me (hopefully). Clay is one of those students who is more than capable of doing well in school, but chooses not to. In Clay's case, his admiration for his older brother, leads him into mischief, including the donkey drawing of his principal. When Mitchell returns home changed, Clay is naturally confused and angry, he doesn't see any need to change. But as Clay struggles to change and slowly realizes that one's reputation is not easily repaired, he starts to realize that his choices have consequences, sometimes serious ones.
Now, I admit, the story does seem a bit oversimplified. In real life, changing one's behavior can be and often is very challenging and doesn't happen over night. But I think Clements makes his point, that the choices we make follow us as we travel down life's road. I can think of more than a few students whose behavior could lead them down some very painful roads and it makes me sad. The writing is good, typical Clements, and the illustrations provide a nice compliment. Recommended for readers who like a good school story.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2011Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseMy kids love Andrew Clements. I have a 9 boy) and 12(girl)year old who have read all of his books. Andrew Clements is an author that children love to read. He keeps it interesting so they want to read and not put the book down. His books are insightful, interesting, captivating and fun to read. I would stronly recommend him as an author and this book. "Fear Itself" is another great book by him. It is part of a series and I would recommend it as well. Basically, you can't go wrong with Andrew Clements as an author!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe story is entertaining, and the book teaches valuable character lessons. This is the type of book that's interesting to read, as well as beneficial by standard.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2013Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseMy students LOVE it every year. Clements is witty and humorous, appealing to adults and kids alike. There is a lot of good vocabulary in this book for any age. Due to the excessive use of the word "jackass" (see illustration on front cover), I would recommend this book for grades 5 and up.

1. Frindel (Frindle)
2. Sin Hablar (no talking)
3. Extra Credit.
4. El último concierto (The last Holiday Concert)
5. The School Story
6. Las notas de Nora (The report Card)
7. El periódico de Landry (The Laundry News)
8. Lunch Money
9. Troublemaker
10. Perdido y encontrado (Lost And Found)
11. The Janitor's boy
