Praise for Fraternal Youth⭐ "Mix Jim Gaffigan, Erma Bombeck and Pee Wee Herman into a Darby Smoothie. Add a dash of nonsense that makes perfect sense and you've got a compilation that spans from raising kids to raising hell. I'm an avid fan."
- Wendy Parker, satirist for Overdrive Magazine
⭐ "Darby stunned me with this book. It's happy, funny, sad and weird - all the things that make up a life well lived, and he tells it with such beauty and momentum. So many chapters swept me away."
- Ginger Cook, Substack Humorist
Early ExcerptsI changed my first diaper on August 27, 2007. It smelled like fermented mothballs with a touch of failed dreams. I don't know where those subtle notes came from, but they were good reminders to use birth control.
2 years, 8 months oldKids got in trouble at the store. Finn dropped a can of tinned pork on Melina's middle toe. The SPAM survived, but Momma no longer has a piggy that eats roast beef. The toe's still there, but it's a scarred vegetarian now.
3 years, 8 months"Finn, didn't you say you'd drink your juice after dinner?"
"I didn't hear me say that."
4 years, 10 months"Shhhh! I heard a sound make a noise." - Fiona
5 years, 11 months"Every time you go into war, you should go potty first." - Finn

Jules B AlrightBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 24 maart 20265,0 van 5 sterren GREAT VACATION READ!! Hilarious and authentic!
Formaat: PaperbackGeverifieerde aankoopFraternal Twins: Fatherhood Fails and Other Tales is one of the funnest and funniest books I’ve read in a long time. Having a real book in hand is becoming more and more uncommon which I think is so sad. There’s nothing like the smell and feel of the paper in your hands. This is a vacation book!
I wish I had been laying in a Cabana (I’ve never actually even sat in a cabana $) on Laguna beach or a beach ANYWHERE while I was indulging myself with a read filled with laughter and guffaws (yeah, I actually did guffaw) and then had to read what was so funny out loud to my husband quite a few times so I really read the book 1.5 times.
Darby is a good old-fashioned storyteller and it seems to be a dying breed.
From the Fiona/Balloon escapade in the airport (REALLY wish there was video) through all the fun and failures (Darby is refreshingly authentic) of parenting twins (I thought the QR codes were brilliant!). There really is no dignity in parenting but there’s a lot of fun to be had. Darby and Melina didn’t skimp out on the fun while raising their twins.
Darby veers away from child rearing often to tell the “Other Tales” of the book subtitle and this is where the storytelling shines through.
One minute I was laughing as I was trying to figure out if he was stoned swinging to and fro in a tree on Mount Eddy (near Mount Shasta in CA) and a while later I was crying with Semi Truck Driver Casey Stengel (Darbys go at hitchhiking) who was playing Darbys guitar for the first time to his poodle, Ross. I ended up laughing there as well but my eyes were still wet with tears.
This was such a fun read. Darby is a master of weaving together a story from his energetic, fully engaged & well-rounded life to create the greatest impact on your emotions, mostly your funny bone.
He and Melina seem like great parents who are intentional about raising their twins to be good people and making the most of their lives.
This was my favorite sentence from the whole book though and from what I have seen of Darby, he’s doing just that.
“The freedom to live large in your own little way is a legacy that I hope to pass on.”
PS: I’ll shave my head and be your Target cart person IF you can promise me a medal.
