Bratislava (Bradt Travel Guides (City Guides)) Paperback – 3 Jan. 2020
Split into 10 easy-to-follow chapters, everything from local politics and cultural etiquette is covered in the opening sections, followed by planning, practical information, local transport (including the new bike-sharing scheme), accommodation, eating and drinking, entertainment, nightlife, sports and shopping.
City walks are also included, focusing on the main sights and beyond, plus sightseeing, from castles and palaces to museums, galleries, churches, gardens and parks. Beyond the city itself there are sections on Devín, Cervený Kamen, Ancient Gerulata - Rusovce, the Small Carpathian Wine Route, Senec, Piestany Spa, Trnava and Kosice. There are also useful reference sections on language (pronunciation and words and phrases) and sources of further information.
The legendary Casanova knew Bratislava and declared it 'the most beautiful city in Europe', and he knew a thing or two about beauty. Situated by the mighty Danube River and nestling in the Small Carpathian Mountains, Bratislava is a good-looking capital filled with good-looking people who look like they're enjoying life. This is a city which effortlessly blends history with hedonism, where world-class restaurants have been joined by a clutch of quality coffee houses and literary tea and bookshops.
Bratislava's small size is satisfying: it's compact and visitor-friendly with many superbly-curated museums and not one but two opera houses, rivalling those in Budapest and Vienna. In short, Bratislava is the perfect destination for a weekend break, a romantic city break, a family holiday or as a base from where to discover the underrated attractions in the rest of Slovakia, and with Bradt's Bratislava you'll have everything you need for a successful trip.

About the Author
This edition has been updated by Tim Burford, who started writing guidebooks for Bradt in 1991, in Romania and Poland, and also led hiking trips in the mountains of Romania, Poland and Slovakia, so passed through Bratislava quite often until 2003. 'I always loved it,' he says, 'And I was very happy to be asked to update this book. I walked everywhere and also made use of the new bike-sharing system to check every detail. I also have a good grasp of the history and culture of central Europe, where I've now worked for almost thirty years.'

About the authors

I live in Cambridge (UK) and have been writing guidebooks since 1991 - first on hiking in Eastern Europe and then Latin America, and then more general guides (for Bradt Travel Guides and Rough Guides) to the same parts of the world, as well as Alaska! I studied French Language and Literature at Oxford University, so have been able to pick up Latin languages (especially Spanish and Romanian) fairly easily; I had a brief career in publishing before jumping the fence to be a writer. I also spend summers in the Alps, leading hiking groups for Wilderness Travel, one of the leading upmarket American adventure travel companies.
I strongly believe that travel is a force for good in this troubled world, but struggle to reconcile this with its environmental effects, especially the effects of flying on the world's climate. I travel overland where possible (trains in Europe, buses in South America) and cycle at home - but there's no avoiding some intercontinental flights, unpleasant though they are.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 December 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseTo note, I didn't use this extensively during my time in Bratislava. But I had a couple of 'free' mornings while I was there when I followed the walking tours set out in the book. These were really well thought out and included easy to read instructions to navigate between the attractions. The walking tours also had page references for more details on the attractions, so I was able to read a bit more about the history / architecture for anything I was very interested in. Also used for a few food / drink recommendations. My only criticism is that the book could have been a smaller 'pocket' size for a city guidebook - it was a bit too large to have in my handbag (see photo for size).

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 February 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is a great guide to this small city. The book has a concise background to the history of Bratislava and Slovakia which gives context for the visitor. The book then moves on to covering pretty much everything the traveller needs to know -places to visit, eat, stay, etc. There is a good balance in the types of these places throughout the book.

I wouldnt buy this book.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 May 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseBratislava is a delightful city, but I honestly don't think that buying this guide added anything significant to my enjoyment of it, bar perhaps the summary map towards the front.
I confess that I really don't 'get' the structure and prioritisation of Bradt guides, and only buy them if there isn't a more mainstream (Lonely Plane/Rough Guide/DK) alternative available. However, as we do much of our travel in more off the beaten track parts of the world, there are occasions on which Bradt is the only alternative, and every time I use them, I get annoyed. There's probably a lesson to be learned here.
There's a lot of content in this guide devoted to accommodation, bars, clubs and restaurants. This would have been appropriate in the days before phone-based Internet access when we planned our travel based on guidebook recommendations. However those days have long passed (even for a technophobe such as myself) and I wonder why such significant space is still being devoted to content that dates so quickly and is more reliably accessed via other online sources? By contrast, the information on places to visit and historical/cultural context that I am really interested in is disappointingly generic and doesn't reflect the level of insider insight that I would expect of a dedicated city guide.
Bradt's Bratislava guide was first published in 2005, with the 2020 version being the 4th edition. I wonder whether it isn't time to give up patching new content onto the old base and instead focus on rewriting this from scratch?
Overall, it's a slim and disappointing volume that in no way justifies its rather hefty pricing. You'll probably get more up to date and interesting content from online resources such as the In You Pocket guide to Bratislava, in which case the amount you save will pay for at least a round of local Slovak beers.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 December 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseHad no issues with the delivery / seller, but to see a black and white book in 2024 was a bit of a disappointment. If you are hesitating between Lonely Planet or this one, then go for the LP. Same price but way higher quality. Even the included map is divided into different pages, you cannot open it up, you have to jump between pages to find your location.

Justin in New OrleansReviewed in the United States on 12 June 20254.0 out of 5 stars Dated but still useful
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is the only guide book to Bratislava in English that isn't some repackaged plagiarism of someone else's guidebook that seem to be so prevalent yet not policed whatsoever on this site. It is out of date, but know that there are slim pickin's when it comes to guidebooks on Slovakia in general. Still, some of this stuff doesn't change, although lots about European travel in the era of the internet-of-things has changed quite dramatically. The original author of this book passed away and it has been updated by someone who knew her. The narrative is very well done and worth buying for the concise historical context of Bratislava alone. So if you are looking for practical tips, this is not going to be useful as if you are wanting to educate yourself about the culture before getting there.

John AntonucciReviewed in the United States on 13 November 20222.0 out of 5 stars Just 5 Pages Regarding 2 Walking Tours & Lousy Maps
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseHate to say negative things, but hopefully the authors use this feedback to improve their book, which has lots of knowledge. The #1 purpose of a travel book is to give accurate walking tours and maps. I could not follow the instructions for the walking tours. There should be a map that lays out each stop. Then the maps at the end of the book have numbers next to sites, but no idea where to reference them back in the book. Authors should look at Rick Steeves Prague book to see how to do this. I had zero problems following the Rick Steeves methodology. This Bratislava book was aggravating. Though, if you want to immerse yourself in planning your trip (24 pages), food places (30 pages), Entertainment, movies and nightlife (26 pages), then this is the book for you. But if you want to optimize the 5 pages of walking tours and the 40 pages describing specific sites that you can't quickly or ever find on the small maps, well then go ahead and buy this book.
