Editorial Reviews

From the Author

By my best estimate, I've spent more than 1,100 days pregnant. It took me more than a thousand days to bring four babies -- 41 pounds of newborn sweetness -- into this world.

This is how I know that pregnancy can feel like a permanent condition when you're in the midst of it all... but compared to all the amazing things you have ahead of you, these 280 or so days will seem to have passed in the blink of an eye. Your life will soon be full of first smiles, first steps, first birthdays... and before you know it, first grade. All the weeks spent growing your baby (or babies) can end up as just a hazy memory.

To that end, this book was created for both your present self and your future self. While you're expecting, the ideas and questions and countdowns can remind you to find a few moments to reflect upon each day. Then, in the years to come, everything between these covers will serve as a record of your symptoms, progress and mindset during this pregnancy.

Why a countdown? To me, there are at least three reasons:

  1. As moms-to-be (whether for the first time, or when expecting a second or later baby), we're excited, curious, impatient and sometimes a little bit nervous about meeting this new person we're making. Each day, we get one day closer to that goal!
  2. At times, pregnancy can be tough. Whether you're dealing with endless morning sickness or heartburn or sleeplessness or achy ribs from where your babe keeps kicking you from the inside, it's not always rainbows and butterflies. Every 24 hours, that's one day less we have to deal with the not-so-fun stuff.
  3. There may be no better way to appreciate the little moments than to really experience every day of the journey.

The idea for this book was planted years ago, when I was expecting my first child. Instead of getting it published, I put my energy into website development, and created one of the first online day-by-day pregnancy calendars. While I was fortunate enough to have that interactive calendar syndicated to numerous sites -- ultimately reaching millions of women worldwide -- I never stopped thinking about my print concept.

I wanted to create a day-by-day calendar for pregnancy in which you could track time counting down and counting up, plus see the time passed in charts and percentages. Every page would feature timely tidbits, ideas to consider, information you need to know, and space to record your own thoughts. Plus, there needed to be extras -- like charts, checklists and planners -- to help you prepare for the next stage, and to make it easy to remember everything you need.

And now you have in your hands the book I wish I'd had during my own pregnancies - and I hope you will enjoy making it your own! Write down your thoughts about your pregnancy as the days pass, and fill in the spaces with your own details and answers to the questions. Take pictures every month of you standing sideways against the same door or wall so you can compare photos and see your progress. You can even manage your prenatal appointments, keep track of your pregnancy firsts, and plan what you need for birth and for baby with the checklists and reminder pages in the back of this book.

For all its ups and downs, pregnancy is measured in days, weeks and months -- while the rest of our life is usually counted in years. So at some point in the future -- maybe two babies or two decades from now -- I hope you'll be glad to have a keepsake full of memories from this fleeting, amazing, life-changing time.
