Round Loom Knitting - Fun for One!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2014I researched these high and low before choosing. It seems that the two contenders for the top item are the Knifty Knitter and the Darice looms (the Boye and Martha Stewart and others seem to be considered very low quality).
Some more "professional" reviewers like the Darice knitter better because the space between the pegs is smaller, resulting in a tighter knit. I decided on the Knifty Knitter because so many reviewers were complaining about the flimsy quality of the Darice Knitter. I have to say, I am SOOOOO happy with my choice of the Knifty Knitter! The quality is very sturdy and heavy-duty. I also like it that the pegs are wedged in rather than glued or molded. Sometimes that means a peg may come loose, but it is easy to push it back into place. If this bothers someone, then the pegs could easily be glued in for extra security. I have already knitted two hats using the great instructions that came with the kit, and the hook is very strong and sturdy, with a nice rubbery feel to the handle. I was using a bulkier yarn, and knitting with loose tension. I like very much how the hat came out very stretchy and super-even, like a professional! Next I will use a common medium weight yarn with double threads, still with a loose tension (I learned quickly that a tight tension makes it too hard to pull the bottom yarn off the peg).
I absolutely adore this product in every way--especially that I can knit now without having to learn knitting!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2016I used to knit with regular needles but have some issues with vision and dexterity, so this was just the ticket to get back to knitting. There are four round, plastic looms to make different-sized hats and other projects. It also comes with a yarn needle and a knitting tool. The pegs have slots in them, so you can use them as a guide for your knitting tool even if you can't see perfectly well. I'm still learning how to make things, but have knitted a few nice hats and mini-blankets. Even made a tiny hat for my cat (just experimenting - he wasn't having it. Nope.) The only thing you'll need to keep in mind is that the yarn needs to be constantly replenished, and it can add up to lots of money spent over time, if you really get hooked (pardon the pun.) I've really come to enjoy the round loom, and can't go a full day without doing at least a little bit of knitting.
I've been using a ratings system to gauge how well a product works for seniors (silver stars) and people with disabilities (thumbs up symbols), in my reviews.
4 Silver Stars in terms of ease of use for seniors - helpful in terms of improving dexterity, as you wrap the yarn in and around pegs repeatedly. For those with visual issues, the slots on the pegs are useful to slide your knitting tool and not lose track of where the yarn is on the peg. One slight minus: instructions page is written in small font. Also, you have to hunt to find helpful YouTube videos to help you get started with the basics, such as casting on, binding off, how to fix a dropped stitch, etc. Links to tutorials should be provided with such a product.
4 Thumbs Up in terms of ease of use for people with disabilities - as mentioned above, it can be helpful to improve dexterity, but you do need to hold the loom close enough so you can see it, and even though it's very light, it may be difficult for those with disabilities to hold it up for the long period of time it would take to complete a project. If you can, place it on a table to knit.
For me, four out of five stars overall, but for the issues mentioned above, slight demerits. I think you'll enjoy it, if you give it a try.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2013Great instruction included and made my first hat in less than a day. My only complaint, there should be an intermediate size loom. I wanted to make hats for chemo patients are a center I myself go to and hats for myself. I love that I can use a lighter (4) yarn so that the hats are wearable indoors as the weather gets colder, but there needs to be a large loom. The yellow loom hat was too big for even my husband's head, so I use the green, which just makes it for my head (22-23"). The red loom makes a hat too small for an adult head, but probably more for teens. Overall, happy with my purchase. I've made the one x-large (which is going in the donate bag) and 12 hats for my chemo group. Now going to start a few for myself and for my next chemo treatment.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2016If you are anything like me and have NO yarn skills whatsoever (knit, crochet, etc), then this is definitely for you. I purchased loom set to try and learn to knit baby hats and booties for charity as well as scarfs, mittens, socks, and other items. The set includes 4 looms, a hook pick tool, an instruction manual and a plastic see-thru zip carrying bag with a handle. The looms included range from small to extra large. Blue = 5 in" / 24 pegs, Red = 7" / 31 pegs, Green = 9" / 36 pegs, and Yellow = 11" / 41 pegs. Loom knitting is VERY easy. You just wrap the pegs according to the pattern, and use the tool to bring one set of loops over or under another. I made my first hat in about an hour. The instructions were useless to me and I found a perfect website that has step-by-step instruction videos on how to do it, and has hundreds of free patterns for all kinds of items to knit with video links. Loomahat is my favorite and there are many others such as Provo craft, just google "loom knitting" and you are all set. Amazon has many other size and styles of looms and accessories. I think this is my best purchase so far! This arrived quickly and is a great price for everything.. I highly recommend this set!
