About the author

Naved Abdali is a thoughtful and disciplined investor known for his data-driven yet deeply human approach to the markets. Rather than chasing short-term trends or relying on market timing, Naved emphasizes patience, behavioral awareness, and long-term consistency as the cornerstones of successful investing.
His investment philosophy centers on understanding the underlying drivers of market behavior that shape investor psychology and using that insight to build resilient portfolios. Naved believes that true edge comes not from complexity or speed, but from maintaining composure, staying focused on what matters, and avoiding the common pitfalls that ensnare many investors.
Having navigated both personal and professional investing landscapes, Naved writes from the perspective of an individual who balances family, career, and everyday responsibilities with a commitment to disciplined wealth-building. He encourages investors to develop a personalized approach that reflects their goals and temperament rather than blindly following popular narratives.
In Investing – Hopes, Hypes, & Heartbreaks, Naved shares his approach to investing as a lifelong journey, one that rewards steady, informed decision-making and emotional resilience more than quick wins or market timing. His work aims to empower individual investors with the confidence and clarity to succeed on their own terms.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is one of the most engaging books on personal investing and finance. It is like listening to an old friend who has endured decades of "playing and timing" the market and concluded there is an easier way. This friend is willing to share the wisdom thru a series of guiding principles. The world of investing and finance is complex. There are many options and decisions a person have to make and decipher sales pitches riddled with complex techno-jargons. Turning financial wishes and investment dreams into a viable strategy is hard. The strategy has to be both forward-looking and executable. a well-considered set of principles can be an important connecting element.
The book organized each guiding principle related to various stages of your investment journey comprehensively covering the choices and decisions you have to make. Principles laid out in the book, help you align your strategy more concretely and applicable to making decisions which in turn you will take along the way. All are viable options, and the option you take depends on your preferences. However, in most cases, you would want to have some consistency in decision-making. In a sense, it sets the frame and define important boundaries. This book is the perfect companion to help you.
This book is an easy read and organized extremely well. You could start at any chapter, read the chapter summary and then drill deep into the content of your interest. After reading this book, I finally understand what "timing the market" means and why it's a bad idea. Simple yet telling. What surprised me most, and what I benefited from the most, was Naved's reassuring view to the behavior of investing. He tells the truth at every stage, and does not pull any punches, such as the market will drop, and you will see your investments half. But, as always, he’s the anchor of sanity, and says we need to hold our nerve when that happens, to actually buy more during those downturns and ride out the bad times, as the good times come a lot more often and provide great returns. I cannot even imagine the impact of those changes a few decades down the road. This book was a game changer for me. A must-read!!!

Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book is mesmerizing. The author has put in great effort to explain the complex investing environment in which we find ourselves these days and break it down brilliantly. I started reading this book four days ago and couldn't stop until I finished today. The book takes a retail investor perspective and illustrates how to play the game within a dynamic market environment. Personally, I have been investing for 20 years now and some concepts that I thoughts I understood, I realized that I had preconceived notions, that were outdated and shattered once I read this book. This book is a must read for all investors.

Amazon CustomerReviewed in Canada on September 11, 20215.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for a retail investor
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the first book I have read which has been written especially for small individual investors by a person who has a background similar to his book audience. It is very well written book and ideally suited to someone who has miserably failed to beat the market and now wants to start afresh.
