The Red Queen: Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature (English Edition) Kindle-editie
“A terrific book, witty and lucid, and brimming with provocative conjectures.” (Wall Street Journal) from the author of the acclaimed New York Times bestseller Genome
Brilliantly written, The Red Queen compels us to rethink everything from the persistence of sexism to the endurance of romantic love.
Referring to Lewis Carroll's Red Queen from Through the Looking-Glass, a character who has to keep running to stay in the same place, Matt Ridley demonstrates why sex is humanity's best strategy for outwitting its constantly mutating internal predators. The Red Queen answers dozens of other riddles of human nature and culture—including why men propose marriage, the method behind our maddening notions of beauty, and the disquieting fact that a woman is more likely to conceive a child by an adulterous lover than by her husband. The Red Queen offers an extraordinary new way of interpreting the human condition and how it has evolved.

Hemant BhardwajBeoordeeld in India op 12 november 20215,0 van 5 sterren Wow, awesome book!
I find the topic of 'evolution of human behavior' very fascinating, particularly evolution of sexual behavior. I used to think that various theories of physics are most fundamental, but now I am convinced that theory of evolution is most fundamental thing humans have discovered. This book is very thought provoking with great knowledge on this subject. One of my favorite line from this book is "A hen is an egg's way of making more eggs".

H.P.J.M.Beoordeeld in het Verenigd Koninkrijk op 24 december 20235,0 van 5 sterren Speculative but fascinating
Formaat: PaperbackGeverifieerde aankoopMatt Ridley has written a book which is a pleasure for anyone interested in science and human nature, while at the same time touching on topics that might make people feel uncomfortable. But his intentions are pure: to work out how human nature has been shaped by sex.
And so we consider some pretty big questions. Like why sex? Why gender? Why 2 (biological) genders (some mushrooms have around 1000)? Are men and women generally different and if so how? Why are people sexually attracted to each and what are they attracted to? Why are we notably different to other animals in terms of intelligence?
The fact that they are big and difficult questions means that there are no simple answers. But Ridley meticulously explores the academic literature and does so very eloquently, often citing bits of literature and history along the way.
At the risk of spoiling some of the book, what does he suggest?
That sexual reproduction (as opposed to asexual reproduction, aka cloning) gave species unique protection against parasites. That genders exist as a way of resolving conflict between the "cytoplasmic" genes (e.g. those found in mitochondria). That males in general (or whichever gender tends to be larger and doesn't raise the young) tend to be more polygamous - though this depends on different sizes between males and females and the role of the male in the upbringing. That men have different psychologies because of their roles as "hunters", while women were "gatherers" who raised the kids. That women are mainly attracted to personality and status, while men youth and beauty. That intelligence (meaning creativity, wit etc) was evolved primarily because of sexual selection - it allows people to outcompete for mates.
Uniting all these strands is the notion of the "Red Queen", from Alice in Wonderland. This is the idea that you might be running faster than someone else, but they catch up and the progress is only relative. The more things change, the more they stay the same kind of thing.
As I said, some people are bound to find some ideas controversial or speculative, especially those about human nature. But Ridley is candid and says himself that half the ideas in the book are probably wrong, and that he wants to derive the "is" not the "ought". Whatever is our nature, we have shown time and again we can transcend it. And isn't it better to start from a solid understanding of what our nature is?
I'd love to see this book updated in terms of the science, in case there has been any new ground. But in any case, it is really good and thought provoking read.
