About the author

Stephanie Burgis grew up in America but now lives in Wales with her husband (fellow writer Patrick Samphire), their two creative kids, and their extremely vocal tabby cat. In between those two points, she spent time playing in orchestras, studying music history in Vienna, and editing the website of an opera company in Leeds.
She writes sparkling romantasy for adults and fun, funny MG fantasy adventures.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a delightful story. Agatha Tremain has lived under the care of her distracted father, teaching herself magic--not the done thing at all for a young lady who has yet to make her debut, but since she has no intention of marrying, this doesn't bother her at all. Until her aunt shows up, determined to oversee her Season in London and find her a husband. Darker motivations come to light, and Agatha finds an unexpected ally, but she has to look to her own self to find resolution.
I really enjoyed this, and there's a lot packed in to a short space here, including how victims can perpetuate the structures that hurt them, resisting other people's narratives about oneself, and to paraphrase Peter Beagle, "Real magic can never be made by sacrificing someone else's liver." Recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt may be the limitations of the length, but the motivations of the lesser antagonists (Miss Blenheim, Horwick) didn't really come through. Are they just bullies? Does the main antagonist have some specific hold over them?
Overall though, it is a sweet little plotline and entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis short novella started out interestingly enough and sort of lost steam. Agatha has spent two years teaching herself magic from her father 'a books. Unexpectedly a wicked, bossy aunt she's not known about whisks her off to London for the Season. There she is informed that she is marrying a man she hasn't met, who never actually appears in the story. However Agatha has been given a hint, by a girl she meets hiding in a closet (!) that she holds more power than she thinks, and bam! she figures out how to use it to escape the marriage and return to her father's quiet country estate. She effortlessly foils the wicked aunt and a wicked lady's maid in a contest that happens offstage. There was a disappointing and rather abrupt happy ending. Wasted potential for an interesting story.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseYes, everything comes out all right in the end. And getting there was such easy fun! Thank goodness Stephanie Burgis is writing more books so I can read them!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAs others have said, it's a cute story, but I too could have done with a little more backstory about the motivations of the lesser baddies.
Also, running off with someone after meeting them once is the worst case of UHaul syndrome I've ever encountered.
What I did appreciate a lot was the fact that none of the language seemed anachronistic to me. I'm hardly an expert on Victorian English, but it seems to me that most non-British authors can get British English right (note for budding authors - Brits don't say "Get it off OF him"). It's really rare to not have my antennae tweaked by an obviously modern term as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a ton of fun to read. I loved the narration voice. The ending was perfect. The message was lovely. Win all around.
Nearly a 5.
Kindle, bought same day as read.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAs with all of Stephanie Burgis' stories, things at first seem rather similar to what you might have seen before––a motherless child with an absent father ruled by a hateful and hating governess and butler. But that is where the magic first comes in, literally. And just when you think Miss Tremain's magic will be moving us to more delightful whimsy, suddenly her very autonomy, her life is threatened. This is a rather brilliant story about learning to recognize and love oneself disguised as a brief romp through a mixture of historical romance and magic. And it is truly magical.
