About the author

Jeremy Whitley is a writer living in Durham, NC with his wife Alicia and daughters Zuri and Amara. He attended The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he received a bachelor's degree in English with a minor in Creative Writing.
Jeremy is also the creator and writer of the comic series "Princeless" from Action Lab Entertainment. In 2011 Princeless was nominated for two Eisners including "Best Single Issue" and "Best Comic for Kids Ages 8-12". It was also nominated for five Glyph Awards and won three for "Best Female Character", "Best Writer", and "Story of the Year". The first volume was also included on a number of Best of 2011 and 2012 lists. Wired also declared the second volume one of the comics to watch in 2013. Princeless also spun-off into sister series "Raven: Pirate Princess" which put an emphasis on following young queer female action heroes through battle and relationship drama.
Jeremy was hired my Marvel Comics to write the acclaimed series "The Unstoppable Wasp" which quickly became a fan favorite and produced two volumes. The book received great acclaim for its handling of its heroine, a young hero with bipolar disorder, as well as its handling of queer supporting characters and relationships. Jeremy has also written for Marvel on such titles as "The Avengers", "The Champions", "All-New X-Men", "Hulk vs Thor: Champions of the Universe", and "Future Foundation".
Through his ongoing relationship with IDW and Hasbro, Jeremy has written more issues of My Little Pony comic books than any other writer, having passed 50 issues while working on "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Season 10". He is also the writer of ongoing comic tie-ins to the "Sea of Thieves" comic books and co-created the character of Lesedi Singh, who has become the poster child for the game series.
His new creator owned series "The School for Extraterrestrial Girls" which he co-created with artist Jamie Noguchi began being released from Papercutz in 2020, with the second volume set for 2023. Also announced in 2023 is his new middle-grades series "The Dog Knight" from Feiwel and Friends with illustrator Bre Indigo.

Visually stunning, with great humor and adventure!
Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2016I love this book so much. I love the story, the characters, even the way the panels are laid out in certain scenes had me gasping. Each page is visually pleasing, with colors, spacing, and pacing that makes sense to the story. It's just all so thoughtfully chosen.
As for the characters themselves, I adore Raven and her band of female pirates and misfits, each unique in appearance and temperament. I also loved the humor and goofiness, certain panels had me laughing out loud or beaming in delight. I really didn't want to get to the end of it, and wondered why I hadn't already ordered the next one so I wouldn't have to wait to read it.
And I am way too emotionally invested in the romantic storyline and who Raven will end up going with... though I know who it will be if I could have my say. I am really hoping for a few more romantic scenes amidst all the swashbuckling in the next few novels, I have enjoyed them so much so far! And hooray for such a varied cast of women, wearing exactly what you would expect them to be wearing if they were sea dogs and scallywags and pirates - comfortable, practical clothing! But my lord, some of them look dashing wearing it, and that is fun too.
Love it. Can't wait to read the next one.

This is a fantastic series about women taking charge of their lives and being themselves on the high seas. Highly recommended !
Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2018I love this entire book series; it covers the lives of a crew of women turned pirates sailing the high seas, taking down hoards of villains that try to get in their way. The group lives their lives fearlessly, shamelessly, fighting for what they want, whether it be adventure, love or just friends by their side and the freedom of the high seas.
All of the characters are well developed, even the ones who get little screen-time compared to Raven (the main character and bad-ass pirate captain.) and most importantly they come across as a group of normal people thrown into a new and challenging situation. The crew endures hardships and takes time to even figure out how to work together, much less begin pull off Raven's plan to retrieve her family's treasure and her rightful place as Pirate Queen. it's awkward at first, with everyone trying to adjust to their new companions, and realize that they have a little (or a lot) of growing up to do aboard their new floating home.
I don't want to spoil anything, but i will say this; the pirate crew are not infallible. They make plenty of mistakes, and some of them are strictly anti-violence, even when it puts them in dangerous situations. But they learn to trust eachother, and believe in themselves, and grow wonderfully as people. Though there are more then a few bruises and wounds along the way.

Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2018This was a fun read that left me curious about where the character arcs are going. Will Raven learn how to be a captain? Will she and Sunshine get together? What's going on with all the dads? What about the moms? Will Jayla learn to respect pirates? Will the others respect Jayla? Will she ever go back to visit her dad? So many potential story lines!

So much awesome, so little time!
Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2019Raven, aka Black Arrow, from her story in the Princeless main graphic novel, has a ship now, but no crew (and no dragon, aww). Oh, and she's hungry.
First she bumps into Sunshine (who's half elf?) That helps her find Cookie, one of the guys that was on her father's ship once upon a time, and from there she slowly puts together a crew with an old friend and some new ones too.
I love how Whitely let himself take the whole TPB (4 issues I think) to create this crew, because that meant that even before they all got on the ship, the main five characters, Raven, Jayla (Cookie's daughter), Ximera (Raven's former best friend), Katie (first mate and muscle), and Sunshine (a dancer and interested in figuring out Raven) already seem like such rich characters, and their relationships quite interesting. And of course there's some cool subtext between Sunshine and Raven, and between Ximena and Raven (and maybe some between Ximena and Katie, although I may be reading too much into that one).
Who am I kidding, there's sparks between almost every single person on that boat. I guess we'll see where everyone sorts in the next book.

Booty worth grabbin
Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2016I really like pirates, and I'm bi so I'm all about the lady loving... this has both and Raven herself is a fantastically entertaining character. I pretty much have every lesbian pirate thing published & printed in English in my personal library and this is definitely one of the stars.
To be critical and actually review it ...I mean there's nothing bad about it. I could say somethings the backgrounds can seem a little bland but the art work and writing is either on par or totally blows mainstream comics out of the water. I'm eagerly awaiting vol 2 (already pre-ordered it). This is totally worth supporting.

Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2018Princeless: Raven is one of my favorite things. Not one of my favorite comics with queer characters but really just one of my favorite things. Why? I love action, romance, crusades for justice, and I just always, always, always want to see more representation of diverse characters of all kinds, but especially queer folk, people of color, people with disabilities, and I want to see those people just being awesome, and having action adventures with some romance and crusades for justice. This is all that plus it's funny and visually lovely.

Delightfully subversive
Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2018This is a fun tale of friendship and revenge, centered around an all-female pirate crew that's made up of an incredibly diverse, queer group of women. It's silly at times, introspective at others, and beautifully illustrated.

Angel4 out of 5 starsMuy divertido.
