Knowledge Is Beautiful: Impossible Ideas, Invisible Patterns, Hidden Connections--Visualized Flexibound – 2014/10/21

5つ星のうち4.5 (642)

In this sequel to the bestselling book The Visual Miscellaneum, author David McCandless uses stunning and unique visuals to reveal unexpected insights into how the world really works.

Every day, every hour, every minute we are bombarded with information, from television, from newspapers, from the Internet, we’re steeped in it. We need a way to relate to it. Enter David McCandless and his stunning infographics, simple, elegant ways to interact with information too complex or abstract to grasp any way but visually. McCandless creates visually stunning displays that blend the facts with their connections, contexts, and relationships, making information meaningful, entertaining, and beautiful. And his genius is as much in finding fresh ways to provocatively combine datasets as it is in finding new ways to show the results.

Knowledge is Beautiful is a fascinating spin through the world of visualized data, all of it bearing the hallmark of David McCandless’s boundary-breaking, signature style. The captivating follow-up to the bestseller The Visual Miscellaneum, Knowledge is Beautiful offers a deeper, more ranging look at the world and its history, with more connectivity between the pages, a greater exploration of causes and consequences, and a more inclusive global outlook. With a portion of its content crowd-sourced from McCandless’s international following, Knowledge is Beautiful achieves a revolutionary and democratic look at the key issues from questions on history and politics, the facts of science, streams of literature, and much more.

This is a project that will truly push the boundaries of books everywhere, providing insights into our world in a way never seen before.

After watching a TED talk on information, I decided to purchase this book straight away. It's possibly the best book purchase I've made in the last year. The infographics and ways in which information is visualized is simply inspiring.

I'm currently using it for teaching and motivating others to think about how they visualise their information apart from the standard bar charts, etc. The topics inside are also fantastically inspiring, covering a huge range of topics from Astronomy to Diets to Politics and History. Seeing the information visualized in such novel ways has opened different perspectives on the topics.

It's excellent value for money considering each infographic/page could be blown up A0 size into it's very own poster. I'd happily have paid double for this.

Many high priority and academic topics are covered in this book. The author provides an overview of a topic with charts, figures, numbers, and graphs. Done also with style and color. Various topics that are priority issues (carbon budgets, superpower competition, empires, religion) are here, as well as many academic or social topics. The book makes old subjects new and interesting. Some people will use this while browsing the internet or watching TV, like the way one uses the World Almanac to get further detail, while others may find this to be just for a diversion. Most people, though, will learn some new facts and information that they either thought they knew or hadn't known at all.

This book, as well as its prequel (Information is beautiful) is by far the most brilliant example of Infographics I've come across. The author and his research team have done an excellent job at selecting interesting topics and gathering intelligence on a wide range of subjects. The actual artwork and data visualization is quite advanced, easy to read and process and, for lack of a better word, beautiful. Highly recommended. A must-have for anyone interested in infographics (and a wonderful addition to one's coffee table books collection!)
