Christmass party at Memorial 2011
Reid hated work related parties. Especially this Christmas get togethers at the hospital. But it was brought to his attention that he had to attend this one.
It was the first one after he took over from Bob as chief of staff.
Apparently he was expected to make a small speech before the buffet opened. It would be better if his hot boyfriend would be here but he had to be at the Grimaldi shipping Christmas celebration first.
He would be here soon enough.
But if he wanted to eat he had to do the talking part first.
The little speech he had written himself at first. But when he asked Luke to take a look at it he got to see a talent of his partner.
The finished speech managed to keep the message he was trying to put in it, but got funnier and more uplifting to his staff with the help of Luke. He got a good applause when he finished.
Maybe these people where hungry to. He made himself smile thinking that. He knew that it was because it was a good speech. The best he ever got to give, and he was not bad at making short to the point speeches himself.
He loved the smile that Luke had on his face after he complimented him on his help. Not the usual big bright smile that he showed so often and shared with everyone. But a shy smaller smile that somehow made it look like his eyes twinkled even more. The smile that showed Reid that he made Luke feel appreciated. He was hoping to see that smile more often.
With all the Snyder family get togethers he went to since he and Luke got more serious, he was getting better at the small talking bit of the evening to. Luke gave him the tip of listening to the person, replying one time, listening to one more comment and then excusing himself from the conversation.
That little trick helped him deal with all the mundane conversations he had to deal with on a daily basis as chief of staff.
Luke figured out that Reid could even be good in short conversations. He was getting annoyed and grumpy if they took too long. With making sure he always had a plan to get out of these talks faster, he hardly ever got annoyed again.
And it helped to respond politely if he was already planning his way out. The getting out saying of today was "Excuse me I see someone trying to get my attention". His favorite was. "Excuse me I have to check on something" because he was always busy enough to use that excuse.
This way it took him only five minutes to finally reach the buffet table after communicating with all the people who wanted to compliment him on the speech or something less interesting.
At least everybody working at Memorial hospital knew that seeing their chief of staff behind a plate of food meant do not disturb.
But as soon as his plate was empty a new line off people wanting to talk to him formed quickly.
After the fourth time he escaped using the line "Excuse me I see someone trying to get my attention" he finally found someone he wanted to talk to. Standing by the entrance still scanning the room stood his man. The man that made this year great.
As soon as Luke’s eyes found his, he saw that huge smile appear. To Reid that smile means home.
Before his life with Luke started he had a house, a place of work and a place where he ate.
But now every place he spent time with Luke felt like home; the hospital Luke would drop in and give him that smile and restaurants where they would always try and sit at the same table as the last time and of course there apartment.
When they started looking for a place to live he just wanted to let Luke choose; as long as he had a good size refrigerator he would be happy.
But Luke found them a place where all of his wishes would be fulfilled. Big enough for Reid to have an office and for Luke to have a corner desk in the living-room so that they both could work and keep an extra room for guest.
It was very close to the hospital and reasonably close to Katy’s new place and far enough away from Luke’s parents that they wouldn’t drop by without calling first and a great kitchen. Not only did it have a great refrigerator it also had a little pantry.
In the kitchen was a comfortable small table close to the stove. If they had time they would cook and when the other came home they would sit or started helping while discussing their day.
He loved coming home to Luke and delicious smells in the kitchen. And he loved that he sometimes got to be the one to give Luke the same welcome home. He was thinking how happy he was to be the boyfriend of Luke Snyder and nearly feeling guilty that he was becoming more of a spoiled brat than Luke ever was when Luke opened op to him yesterday.
"I’m so glad you are in my life Reid. I have never felt more appreciatedand taken care for in my life. You take me serious when I offer you asuggestion; you make sure I know you are there for me when I am ill or just having some problems at work. And even though you work so many hours you always make me feel important. As soon as you walk in the door you show me how glad you are just to see me. You never complain if I just bring you a coffee at work just so I can steel a kiss. You only seem disappointed if you honestly don't have that much time for me while I disturb you at work. You make me so happy. I love you".
He did not know how it happened but somehow he managed to be good partner, as long as he could be the partner of Luke Snyder.
