Title: Alexandria
Author:
tikific
Artist:
ammo
Fandom: Supernatural
Characters/Pairings: Dean/Cas, Sam/Jess, Metatron, Bobby, Benny, Crowley, Kevin, Garth, Ash, Victor, Lucifer, Abaddon, Uriel, Naomi
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 77,000
Warnings: Cursing, sexual situations.
Summary: Fantasy AU. Castiel De Angelus is a bladesmith finishing his apprenticeship in a sleepy seaside town and caring for his two younger brothers. But when he runs afoul of the new territorial governor, Metatron, he finds himself shanghaied and forced to serve at a remote desert fortification run by the boisterous Winchester family. This ancient outpost, carved out of a mountain by the legendary Men of Letters, is part of mankind's last line of defense against the mysterious desert-dwelling monsters known only as the Enemy. But the real enemy might just be the Winchesters's scheming rival, Lucifer. This one is pure Saturday afternoon serial: think Indy Jones meets Dune with just a splash of Kitchen Nightmares.

Notes: This was such a fun romp. Tiki was great to work with, and I had a hard time picking which scenes to illustrate. I wish I could have found the time to do more, but I'm pleased with the results of the ones I did manage! Also thanks to my Livestream amigos for all your support and general wackiness. <3

My initial thought for the "poster" was kind of an 80s movie vibe with simple elements and bold colors. And then this happened, oops. Tiki's initial description of the story being a "Saturday serial" stuck with me, and when I was brainstorming my art I kept trying to think of some way to work with that. I've forgotten exactly how it happened, but I somewhere in there I had the idea to use the Prince Valiant-styled Sunday fantasy comic strip format. After i nailed that down, it all fell right into place.

(From Chapter 4). I pretty much wanted to draw something with Benny. Oops. And Sam. And y'know, those other two. The map on the wall was Z's creation, a flooded USA.

(From Chapter 12). I actually drew this page first even though it comes later in the story. It was a bit of a tester page, and I was happy with how it worked. I had more in mind originally for Lucifer's design, but of course had to keep it simple for this format. Ah well. For Castiel's magic, I wanted something that looked like a pulp-sci-fi-low-budget effect. I used these tech ring brushes and then just had fun with layers and blurring.

Speaking of designs, this is the first sketch I sent Tiki, to show the ideas I was picking up from the story. She later said Cas reminded her of a Grumpy Skywalker. Yeah, that works. I also leaned more towards "explorer" than "soldier" for Sam's look. I liked his goggles, so they got to stick around in the one page.
Okay but enough about this stuff. Go read the story!
