It was a rare type of cancer that spread to her lungs and had a 25-35% survival rate. It was shocking to see this happen so suddenly to a woman who had a lot to live for, like continuing her studies of Chinese. The 8th of this month would have been her birthday.

Not too long ago she bid us farewell on the forums, and for those who are wondering what happened to her, I'm afraid I have terrible news to give: she died on November 30, 2012 at 3:15 PM. Amy's family has decided to leave her domain alexiel.net up.

I'd like to thank Amy for all that she has done for this community and my condolences go to her loved ones. It hurts to see her life cut so tragically short. Amy was a very kind woman who was more than an inspiration to many, a longtime shrine maker, and a frequent participant of our events: she was also very understanding, creative, and determined. She was made Member of the Month of August 2011 for her contributions.

Thank you and goodbye, Amy. Flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Hello my dear LJ Amassment members!! :) I'm here to announce the winner for October~! :) This month's theme is "literature."

AND THE WINNER IS...

BRIGHT EYES
Daphne's shrine to Peeta Mellarkof The Hunger Games

Bright Eyes is a one-pager that is exquisitely designed and written. It is highly informative but also very personal and has nice humor throughout. It is definitely an amazing read that can be completed in one sitting, but it is very thorough and detailed. Not even once did I lose my interest in both the subject matter and in the writing featured on this site. This gorgeous website got me interested in the Hunger Games and I went to read it myself because of this. If that isn't proof that this website deserves to be SotM, then what is? Congratulations Daphne, your work is more than deserving of this win :)

This shrine was nominated by the lovely Ava (newtype):
"Daphne was all about The Hunger Games before the movie, and all its fabulous promotion came out. She gets brownie points for her vision alone. Her tribute to Peeta was created while the trilogy was being published. Through her writing, visitors can see Peeta through her eyes. The writing is factual, descriptive, but also filled with endearment. I particularly love the quotes she chose to emphasize. I walked away feeling like I really understood what Peeta was all about, without having to strip away any unreasonable bias. Nice work, Daph!"

Here's a big thanks to all of our nominators! They are Destinie, Yuzuki, Ava, Saya, and Jo!! :)

Shrine Spotlight, also known as Site of the Month (SOTM), has been moved to Amassment.Org! The concept is still the same: Each month our community picks an outstanding shrine or fansite to promote based on a volunteer's selection from member submissions. This fansite will be featured at the Directory's Shrine Spotlight page and the Forum's Shrine Spotlight subforum.

New Nomination System
To nominate a fansite for the award, simply fill out the [Site of the Month Nomination Form] at the directory, one form for each shrine nomination. Once you have made a nomination, it will be placed in our nominations queue, and you need not nominate the same shrine again. Your nomination will be removed from the queue only when that shrine has been selected for Shrine Spotlight.

Rewards and Perks
The owner of the Shrine Spotlight fansite will receive the customary promotion, award image, and permanent place on the Winners List. Volunteers will receive forum coins each time they participate in choosing the featured shrine. Nominators will receive coins for each nomination submitted, and additional coins if their nomination wins, so write your reasons for nomination well!

Look out for additional rewards for Shrine Spotlight participation in the future. Thank you for continuing to acknowledge and celebrate these outstanding fansites. Now go nominate your favorite shrines!

Hello guys! Finally, it's time to reveal August's SOTM! :D Apologies for the delay!

Thanks a lot to the people who nominated the shrines, namely Mikari, Vii and Saya.

So, without further ado, I present you Amassment's August 2012 SOTM!

Wishing Star

A shrine to Rinoa Heartilly from Final Fantasy VIII by Ava

I chose Wishing Star for SOTM because it's really an amazing shrine! I have never played FFVIII, I only know the basics of the plot and characters of the game. Regardless of not having played the game, Ava's shrine to Rinoa immediately pulled me in. The shrine was truly a pleasure to read (as I think all Ava's sites are), the information was worded in a way that kept my attention all the way through the section about the site itself. It's amazing to see how much Ava loves Rinoa, by first making the shrine back in 2001 and then revamping it in 2011 -- that's 10 years and counting of love for this character and passion for shrine-making.

The section I enjoyed the most is definitely "Reflections", which has lots of interesting theories and musings about Rinoa, which perhaps will make you see this character under a new light. This shrine has lots of information about Rinoa, some of it which I think was researched by Ava especially for this shrine, to make it as complete as possible. It's clear that Ava put a lot of effort in it, and I really hope she will one day add the sections that are listed as "coming soon", because I can't wait to read more!

Mikari: Wishing Star does an amazing job at portraying the various aspects of the classic video game character Rinoa Heartilly, from Final Fantasy VIII. I especially enjoyed the information of Rinoa's appearances in media other than the game, which proves that the author went beyond just playing and studying the main game, but really got into looking for more about the character. Another section I really liked was the Reflections, it has a lot of interesting well developed theories and analysis.

Many congratulations, Ava! :D

Hello everyone! I'm Amanda, and I'm a huge fan of Amassment and its members. The web design and content of the sites listed here are exemplary; you guys have done a fantastic job creating interesting and aesthetically appealing sites, and I'm truly impressed.

I've been web designing for a number of years, and I use to make websites about anything simply so I could practice my design and coding skills. My sites inclue Angel (a shrine to Yuna of FFX), Songstress (a shrine to Lenne of FFX-2), and Dearly Beloved (a past-layout archive).

Okay, so about me? Like I said, my name is Amanda, I'm 23, a college student on my way to becoming a high school English-lit teacher, and I've dabble and practiced web design for almost ten years. This account is used for my website updates; my account where I post icons/personal journal entries is magikarp27.

I suppose that wraps it up. <lj:music>FFV OST - Home, Sweet Home</lj:music>

Hi there. I've actually been following this group for awhile, but not via my LJ account (read: I was too shy to join, and I spent half of my time on Tumblr). I'm hoping joining will enable me to get off my lazy rear and finish up half of my shrines I started. :)

I'm Aa-chan, 28, Hispanic, Pharmacy Tech by day, and website designer by night. I own nintendo-princess.us <strike>(and sandmoth-pheer.net, white-mage.net, and stardustdrops.com</strike>), and adore the hell out of Final Fantasy IV. It was one of the first games I played by myself as Final Fantasy II for the SNES ala North American release. :)

...Am I showing my age yet? Hoo, boy. ^^;

Anyway, with my fondness for FFIV, I do have a couple of fanshrines: Melodic Solace, and Twin. 'MelSol' is a fanshrine to Edward (or Gilbert) and Anna (mah babeh), and 'Twin' is... Yeah, you guessed it: a shrine to Palom and Porom. ( Twin is in the infantile stages right now, so pardon the broken links... ^^;;; )

I feel kinda inferior, though. I notice a lot of you use PHP while I use ye ol' HTML/CSS/DIVs. @_@; Heh... I hope I can learn PHP one day too. :)

Uhm... I used to own mysidia.nu, but I let it expire 'cause I got married. >>; Funny thing is, now I'm divorced and have a lot more time to dedicate to shrine work. Go me. D:

Nice to meet you all! ♥

Can you spare a couple hours to make a fellow shrine maker happy? If so, you should volunteer to select the winner of our monthly Site of the Month Award!

To volunteer, submit your contact info and availability at the SOTM Communications Post, located on the top-right sidebar of our community. Former volunteers do not need to resubmit your information; this is merely a reminder for people who may not know where to go.

After the official opening of Amassment.org, Site of the Month will be renamed and relocated to the domain and forums. This revamp includes a new nomination system that will be easier for everyone involved. One thing that will not change is the importance of community members in the recognition process. Your nominations and your winning selections are the essential elements of the Site of the Month Award.

As always, if you have any thoughts you prefer not to discuss on Livejournal, feel free to email me at ava@amassment.org .

When I got the mail full of links with really great shrines, I was for a moment scared, but then, I mean, every shrine that was nominated is really great and has stuff to give, I find them all beautiful, but there was place for just one winner for the Month of July.

First of all than you all of you who took your time and nominated the shrines: Aku, Destinie, Mikari, Todd, Varen, Vii. I loved all the nominations, believe me.

Now,.... let's go down to business...

Poltergeist
Tidus - Final Fantasy X

Let's start with what made me choose this site, with all the shrines that were nominated (believe me there were a lot of them) - but this one shows the love for the subject, the care for the shrine. I love how Todd introduces the readers to FFX (I personally never played this one), and then how he fragmentates the information about Tidus to show everything about him. Another great thing is the way Todd writes, it's not difficult to read and it's easy to understand what he wants to say. It' quite refreshing to read, and what I really love the most is how Todd manages to analyse every bit of the character... Tidus.

Mikari: This is another of my favorite shrines on the net. A lot of time and thought has clearly been put into it, with detailed analysis of Tidus from Final Fantasy X and its sequel, along with a personal touch in the enjoyable writing and media. It's one of those sites that's always fun to go back to.

Destinie: Poltergeist is a shrine that I have been visiting to many years and have re-read several times. All of Todd's shrines stand out to me because they are all written and tended to with care. The reason I have come to really appreciate this shrine is because of its uniqueness. Todd doesn't just present the character to us in an informational fashion, instead, he talks about Tidus as though he was a real person with conflicts, emotions, and true personality. Todd shares his affections with this character also by pouring out himself in the shrine, comparing his life with Tidus's, and the entire shrine explains why he feels so strongly for the character. It's unique and it pulls at your heartstrings, this shrine is less of a site and more of a personal memoir. I think Poltergeist is one that everyone should visit and re-read several times over.

Early Access

Hello everyone! We would like to invite you guys to have early access to one of our biggest new developments, our revamped forums! Our domain and forums are where we expect most of Amassment's activity to occur in the future, so we encourage everyone to register! While we plan to finish up the current events and SOTM at our Livejournal community, we expect all of our future activities and most of our future discussions to occur at Amassment.org. An official launch date will be set in the near future, and you all can join us for our grand opening party. For now, though, feel free to join the forums and start posting!

Why are we leaving Livejournal?

Well, we're not really leaving Livejournal. Amassment @ Livejournal will still be up and running. It just will be a small part of Amassment, though, and will no longer the main part of the community. Let's face it: less and less people use Livejournal everyday. It's become unreliable as of late, and when it is up, it's dead. Many of our members have told us they've only hung on to their Livejournals to continue being apart of Amassment, and some of our members have already left Livejournal altogether. We're excited about Amassment.org because people won't have to have a Livejournal to be part of Amassment anymore. Imagine how many new people we can reach out to.

How are these forums different from our last one?

When we launched our first set of forums a few years ago, we did so because members were asking for a place they could interact with each other and discuss things that didn't relate to shrines. We prohibited shrine discussion on those forums, because we wanted to keep Amassment @ Livejournal active. It was more of a place of fun. At that time, that was the best decision.

Now, though, with Livejournal dying, and so many shrinemakers not using Livejournal, it makes sense to have a domain as our central base, and use forums as a way for our members to participate at Amassment. Shrine discussion isn't just allowed at these new forums; it's encouraged. We of course have fandom and fun boards set up, too, and an Events and SOTM board will eventually be set up for our activities.

Our forums allow us to separate our content as well, so we can discuss and help webmasters with all parts of shrining – from content like we've previously been focused, and now to design! That's right, we have a board set up for you to post and beta your designs and graphics without annoying people who are more content-focused.

One last thing...

There's a significant new part of Amassment we haven't talked about yet. We've opened a Marketplace. Posting at Amassment's forums, participating in our events, and volunteering for SOTM or other activities will now earn you coins. More on that is discussed at the forums, but basically, you guys can purchase badges and other things to show off, and you can even open your own shops to offer graphics and other web services.

You'll want to join quickly because the first 10 non-staffer members who join the forums will receive 10 coins as a head start. :)

Now onto the forums!

http://board.amassment.org

Hey guys, this is sort of long overdue, as many of our staffers have been hard at work for a little while now, helping us prepare our domain and forums, the next stage of Amassment. More information on that soon! For now, we'd like to call out Amassment's new staffers so they can get credit for their work, and so you all know who you can contact if you have issues or questions in our various areas.

The Directory Staffers who will be assisting Masao in adding, removing, and editing links to our shrines list, and keeping our Members page up to date are Karen and Yamila. You can contact Masao, Karen, or Yamila if you need a shrine link added or updated, or want to be listed on our Members page.

The Events Staffers are Juhi, Sofia, and Chibi. They will be working with Varen and me in coming up with and posting various events and activities for you guys to take part in. You may have already noticed their work in the Minor Character and One Page Shrine marathons. We're all hard at work and planning lots of stuff for you guys. If you have an idea for an event or marathon, or want to volunteer to run one, feel free to contact any Events Staffer. We're all here to support you guys with events.

The Forum Staffers are dubiousdisc, Mikari, Saya, and Sarah. They, along with Destinie, will be instrumental in the next big Amassment development. Again, more on that later.

Ava will still be doing shrine and member spotlighting. If you have any questions about, or want to volunteer with SOTM, she's still the one to talk to.

Having a large staff at Amassment is going to allow us to do more, and help you guys out a lot faster. Please don't hesitate to contact any staffer if you have any questions or issues down the road. :)

This is your Communications Mod, Destinie, here with a new Amassment Chat Post! Since there's a lot of new members I figured that it was about time we try to spin one of these up again. Join our group chat over AIM on Tuesday, June 26th at 8:00pm EST, that's tomorrow night!!

A Testimony

Before I begin, I want to just give a brief testimony and why you should join in on an Amassment chat. *nudge nudge, wink wink* Back when I first joined Amassment in 2009 (I was a lurker for about a year before I made my official intro post like many of you have done!) I didn't know anyone. I was in school, brand new to the *new* world of shrines, and eager to get to make friends in this community. I joined in on a chat and it was so fun, and a great opportunity to meet the other people who have similar interests. I used to be really shy about IMing and chatting to people, especially new people, but I can tell you that everyone is really warm and welcoming, and it is a wonderful experience!

Date and Time

Join our group chat over AIM on Tuesday, June 26th at 8:00pm EST, that's tomorrow night!!

How to join a chat

Step One- Fill out this form:

<b>My IM client of choice is</b>
<b>My Username is</b>
<b>The times I am available are</b>
<i>Please unscreen this comment so other people can IM me!</i> (OPTIONAL)

Step Two- When you sign on tomorrow night for the chat, send an IM to Cumulusfalls (That's me!) and I'll bring you into the group. (Or any other Amassment Mods who are on at that time)

Step Three- Chat the night away! Hope to see you there. :)

It's time to announce a new Member of the Moment. In contrast to SOTM, which is decided by community members, Member of the Moment is a gift from the mods to say "Thank you" to a member who goes out of their way to continue making Amassment community that it is today.

Member of the Moment:
Aku (giorno)

Mod comments... She's been participating in several of our events, and she's even nominates for Site of the Month frequently, something I even sadly can't accomplish. On the side, she contributes to the shrining community more with her own group dedicated for graphic design and layouts. And her efforts really show: her fansites reflect both her strengths in design, writing, and the dabble of good humor. Thanks again, Aku!

daysees: I've loved watching Sofia's collective grow over the past months and years, and I love that she uses Amassment for motivation, in turn motivating others at Amassment through her work. She participates in most events and discussions, putting passion into everything she does. It's that passion that makes her stand out to me. I'm very happy to have her around, and I hope we have her around for months and years to come. :)

newtype: Aku quickly became a friend who earned my affection, respect, and loyalty though her genuine actions. She demonstrates extreme maturity in her consideration to others, all while keeping it real and retaining originality. Aku's participation in threads has been very welcoming, encouraging, and well-intentioned with no hint of judgment or bias. She also brightens up the online community with outrageous silliness and general positivity. Lastly, Aku goes out of her way to appreciate people and make them feel happy about their work. For that, I am grateful. Thanks and congrats on being MOTM.

Greetings! I'm earthy, and I've been an Amassment lurker/admirer/sometimes participant for quite some time (I used to own storygirl.org, which is now defunct). I'm just now thinking about getting my fansite mojo back on, and I have questions!

1. What sort of process did you go through to choose your domain name?
2. Do you also have a professional site, and if so, do you make an effort to keep it separate from your personal/fandom sites? Why or why not?
3. Do you think shrining/fansiting is still as popular as it once was, with blogging and social media taking on a bigger role on the interwebs?
4. Do you use your personal/fansites primarily as fandom outlets, or do you also use them as playgrounds to test/learn coding skills? What sorts of coding/design skills do you think are most important for personal websites these days?

Thanks for giving these a think, and I look forward to getting to know you lovely people again! ^_^

    <lj:music>Believer</lj:music>

Hello, i was directed here from a topic i started on TAFL forums, but before i get to posting my questions i want to introduce myself. I'm Rika24 (sometimes Rikafire or Kaida Spirit if Rika24 is taken). I've always found shrines/fansites interesting and in the past i've tried to make ones that were interesting and showed my love for the character or series i'm shrining.

Now onto my questions:

i'm planning on updating my Obito Uchiha fanlisting/shrine with a new layout (and now that i have time, i can actually get the content done as well). i already have the layout planned mostly in my head. i'm thinking victorian style, only with multiple shades of grey, with orange being the only color.

so i have two questions for those that own shrines and/or like to visit them. what type of content do you like to see on a shrine?

and my other question is, which do you think is the better menu style? everything out as a sidebar like my Obito shrine currently has: http://hokage.fifteenth-moon.net/obito/ or have the menu condensed with only categories listed and further content under each, like my Masaru shrine is: http://rikafire.fifteenth-moon.net/masaru/

i used to like the side bar because going through multiple pages got annoying after a while when i visited shrines (especially when i had a slow connection), but now i kinda like the cleaner look of the condensed menu (the sidebar can make it look too cluttered, or in the case of my Obito shrine, make the page too long.

i also want to expand on my Fuuko and Raiha relationship shrine, but don't know what else to add http://hokage.fifteenth-moon.net/storm/shrine.php i'm new to relationship shrines so i don't really know what to add other than the current content.

thanks in advance!

With the summer break approaching, why not take some time to get back in the fansite mood, and maybe even try to accomplish one of your New Year's Resolution? And what better opportunity than the One Page, One Month marathon!

Schedule
All sites should be completed by July 31st. Until then, you are free to sign up whenever you want. There are no time limit for sign ups.

Rules

The main goal is to create a one page fansite. You are free to be creative with that choice, but generally, there should be no seperate pages.

Any subject will be accepted.

If you are converting a fanlisting, you must use a separate URL for your fansite. For example, instead of making a page like http://fanlisting.domain.com/fansite, try using http://fansite.domain.com/. Feel free to merge them after the event is over.

If you decide to change your mind on the subject, or if you feel that you need more time or wish to drop out, please contact any of the Event Staff as soon as possible!

When you are finished, please create a 200x40 banner for your fansite and include a link to your completed site and the banner in the Submissions post (which would be up in a month or so).

Also, please refrain from plugging your site until after the marathon is finished! You are free of course to plug in your personal journals/social networking sites or in private conversations with your friends, just not in the main community.
Repetition in Shrines

When analyzing a character for a shrine and exploring scenes or events in different angles for essays, do you find it hard not to be repetitive? Let's say an event is super important to Character A, the character you are shrining, and changes him in some way. Let's say that that event also is important to another character involved, Character B, and enhances or changes Character B's relationship with Character A. If you are going to cover how that event changed Character A, and then cover the relationship with Character B, you're going to have to discuss the event twice. How do you go about it so you're not repetitive?

And while we're on it, does repetition in shrines you're reading bother you?
