Do you need to change you perspective?
My Dad’s favourite film was Apocalypse Now. For years, I really wanted to love it because he did – but I just couldn’t see what he saw.
On Friday night I sat down and gave the three hour epic another go and fell in love with the movie!
For all those years since my first viewing, I considered myself someone that doesn’t like Apocalypse Now.
I have a serious fascination with the IMDB Top 250 list – it’s my cinema bible. When I’m really off with my opinion of a highly-rated film, it bothers me.
For context, Apocalypse Now is ranked as the 56th best movie of all time with a rating of 8.4.
I was probably 18 when I first watched the film. In the last two decades, my tastes have matured significantly. Had I not recognised this change, I might never have revisited the film.
What changed? The themes of war and human nature that once seemed overwhelming now resonated. The cinematography I’d overlooked before now captivated me.
Our perspectives aren’t set in stone. They evolve as we grow, learn, and accumulate life experiences.
This is a simple example, but how many other judgments or opinions do we hold onto without re-examining them?
What else in our lives might deserve a second look?
Sometimes, the most profound changes come not from the world around us, but from a simple shift in how we see it.
It’s worth asking yourself: Do you need to change your perspective?
