Understanding its purpose and benefits is helpful for any artist exploring this medium.

Let’s take a closer look.

The Basics of Gesso

Gesso, in general, is a primer used to prepare a surface (often canvas or wood) for painting. It creates a slightly textured ground that helps paint adhere better. Traditional gesso typically contains a mixture of binder (like acrylic polymer or rabbit skin glue), chalk, and pigment.

Why can’t I use acrylic gesso with encaustic?

Acrylic gesso might seem like a convenient option, but it’s not suitable for encaustic painting. Here’s why:

Acrylic paint, including acrylic gesso, is made from pigment, water, and tiny particles of plastic acrylic resin. As the paint dries, the resin particles bond together to form a durable, plasticky finish. Wax won’t adhere properly to this non-porous, smooth surface, leading to issues with flaking or peeling over time. Encaustic gesso, on the other hand, is specifically designed to provide the porous and absorbent ground that encaustic painting demands.

In Joanne Mattera’s book The Art of Encaustic Painting, one artist claims to have seen the wax of a completed encaustic painting slide right off of the acrylic gesso!

Why use encaustic gesso to prepare a substrate?

R&F Handmade Paints makes a very good Encaustic gesso that allows us to:

create a white, toothy, gessoed surface ideal for Encaustics

start with an excellent surface for adding a huge variety of media to our Encaustic works of art before laying on the wax, such as soft pastel, charcoal, watercolours, gouache, marker, graphite, etc.

save money by enabling us to prime our own substrates, rather than buy pricey pre-gessoed encaustic boards

It’s good to know that even R&F’s gesso contains some acrylic. Read more here.

How to Apply Gesso:

Begin with a rigid, heat-resistant surface, such as a wooden panel.

Sand the surface lightly to ensure good adhesion.

Apply 2-3 thin coats of gesso with a brush or roller, allowing each layer to dry thoroughly before adding the next.

Let the final layer cure for at least 24 hours before starting your encaustic painting.

If you want to sell your encaustic artwork and ensure it lasts as long as the centuries-old Fayum Portraits, it’s important to prepare your substrates with gesso specifically designed for encaustic painting. This will help keep your collectors and the galleries representing you happy, while preserving the integrity of your art.

That said, if you prefer, you can skip gesso altogether and paint directly on a wooden substrate. Many artists enjoy the natural texture and aesthetic of unprimed wood, and it works perfectly fine for encaustic painting.

If you’re interested in this topic, read these posts:

Make your own Encaustic Gesso

The Freezer Test – how to test suitable encaustic grounds

Yes, you can use Chalk Paint in place of Gesso

Venetian Plaster an Alternative to Gesso

Tinting Encaustic Gesso

Encaustic Underpainting using a Stay-Wet Palette

This post was originally written by Victoria Wallace and published on March, 18, 2011.
