{"id":272,"date":"2011-03-15T10:40:48","date_gmt":"2011-03-15T14:40:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/encausticartist.com\/?p=272"},"modified":"2025-01-29T15:50:03","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T20:50:03","slug":"microcrystalline-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allthingsencaustic.com\/microcrystalline-3\/","title":{"rendered":"How is Microcrystalline Encaustic Wax different from traditional Beeswax?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When I saw microcrystalline encaustic wax art displayed at The Artist Project in Toronto, I was very interested to see how it compares with beeswax encaustic medium. Of the ten artists showing encaustic artwork, two of them used encaustic medium made with microcrystalline, not with beeswax\/damar. The effect was a quite different from what I know of encaustic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Microcrystalline compared to beeswax\/damar encaustic medium<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing I noticed was that the paintings had a different textural quality\u2014it was almost like plastic. I also noted that it didn&#8217;t have a lovely beeswax smell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microcrystalline is a petroleum-based wax that will give off vapours in the molten stage. Extra consideration should be taken to provide proper <a href=\"https:\/\/allthingsencaustic.com\/encaustic-studio-ventilation\/\">studio ventilation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reasons artists choose Microcrystalline Encaustic wax<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Microcrystalline has a <strong>higher melting temperature<\/strong> than beeswax so <strong>it is more pliable<\/strong> allowing for more time to mold, shape, model, cast, carve and form objects. You can apply encaustic paint over the modeled surface with minimal disturbance to the bottom sculpted surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microcrystalline is also <strong>less expensive than beeswax<\/strong>. Some artists paint exclusively with microcrystalline wax&nbsp;others use a combination of microcrystalline and beeswax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microcrystalline will yellow over time due to &nbsp;residual oils in the refining of wax. For this reason, it is best to add pigment to the wax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I spoke at length with Nina Sampaleanu. Much to my surprise Nina said that she switched from using beeswax to microcrystalline because of headaches. I would have thought that the natural beeswax would be less likely to produce headaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nina &nbsp;Sampaleanu was showing two-sided sculptural encaustic pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microrcystalline is ideal for <a href=\"https:\/\/allthingsencaustic.com\/building-up-texture\/\">encaustic accretion<\/a> pieces.
