While both are wax-based, they have unique characteristics and techniques that set them apart.

What is Cold Wax Medium?

Cold wax medium is a soft, paste-like substance typically made of beeswax, solvent, and sometimes resin. It is mixed with oil paints to create rich textures and layers. Cold wax is applied at room temperature and does not require heat.

Key Features of Cold Wax Painting:

Used at room temperature.

Creates matte, velvety finishes.

Mixed with oil paints to enhance texture and speed up drying time.

Should not be heated due to the presence of solvents.

What is Encaustic?

Encaustic is a hot wax medium made from beeswax, damar resin, and pigment. It is applied in a molten state and fused with heat, often using tools like heat guns or torches.

Key Features of Encaustic Painting:

Requires heat at every stage of the process.

Each layer must be fused (reheated) to adhere properly.

Creates luminous, layered effects that can be buffed to a glossy shine.

Encaustic medium contains no solvents.

Comparing these two mediums

Cold wax medium and encaustic are fundamentally different in both composition and application. Cold Wax Medium contains solvents, is mixed with oil paints, and is applied without heat. Whereas, Encaustic Medium contains only wax and damar resin, requires heat to apply and fuse, and does not involve solvents.

It is important not to confuse cold wax painting with encaustic painting. Cold wax medium is used at room temperature and does not involve the encaustic painting process, which literally means “to burn.”

Health and Safety Considerations

Unlike encaustic, cold wax should not be heated as it contains solvents. Heating cold wax can release harmful fumes. Encaustic, on the other hand, must be molten to work with and requires proper ventilation during the process.

Book recommendation:

Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts & Conversations by Rebecca Crowell and Jerry McLaughlin is widely regarded as a comprehensive resource for anyone interested in exploring cold wax painting.

The book covers a range of topics, from foundational techniques and materials to more advanced concepts like composition, layering, and surface texture.
