The seasons were turning. Winter was making way for spring and the coastline already showed a flush of flowering amongst the cliffs and gullies. The ocean was still angry, waves crashing against the beach and eating at the sand. They tossed up spray, cloaking the sky in a continual haze that shook the light of dawn.

The air was brisk as he stepped out onto the deck. Dressed in shorts, he ignored the goosebumps prickling as he encountered the chill. Wiping his hands on a dishtowel, he walked across the deck as if to survey his domain and leant against the railing, breathing in sea spray and mist.

Yesterday had been interesting. Some old acquaintances had dropped him a line. Apparently they were in the area and might drop by sometime. He hadn’t had many visitors out here beyond family for a very long time and he found himself looking forward to their visit.

Knight was likely to turn up later. Michael was still unsure about the man, android, AI, whatever he wanted to call himself. He was sure he meant well, but old wounds often never healed and trust would need to be built.

He took a deep breath and tasted salt on his tongue. The ocean continued to roar and a lone seagull let loose a squawk somewhere up in the mist above him.

Buying this beach house was one of the best things he had ever done.

Rest

He was sick to death of resting. Life had become boring and he found himself wanting some of the action he used to experience.

Was it wrong to seek excitement? Especially when that excitement usually entailed some kind of life threatening event involving either himself or those he loved.

No, not that kind of thrill. He shivered.

But something.

He loved his beach home, he love the sea, the birds, the sand, walking amongst it all at sunset, but there was a core of him that was built for something else. Deep inside what he was the man who made a difference still existed. He strived to come to the fore, to reach out and save, to do what he had been reborn to do.

Michael was just Michael.

But Michael Knight refused to die.

The darkness was pleasant.

A cold wind blew in off the ocean, its whistle mingling with the roar of the ocean and heralding the winter that had begun to leech into the landscape.

Summer was over.

He was cold, but he gave it no consideration. He had spent so much time alone over the last few months that his own company had almost become welcome, if a little predictable. He missed many things, but he had learnt so much more.

The sand chilled between his toes, even more so than the wind, and random twigs and stones stuck at the soles of his feet, catching skin in the dark. He paid them no heed. The lands behind his beach house were familiar now, paths worn between saltbush and wind-lashed tree, his footprints and the tracks of animals the only impressions amongst the brush.

Spiderweb caught his face, invisible silken thread dancing across his nose and tangling in his eyelashes.

He jumped back, flailing at the air before him.

Something crawled across his hand.

He knew what it was, and he danced the dance of the bug ridden, his feet stumbling in the dark.

But the darkness ate everything and soon the spider and its web were gone, only the adrenalin remained. A pounding heart and hot breath.

The cold wind blew in off the ocean and he turned back to his path, wandering amongst the brush.

Summer was over.

For some.

Cold (Challenge for libraryofwinds)

Despite the warm summer weather, the house was cold when he returned. It was empty. No voices bounced off the walls, no chatter, no smiles, no playful headbutting. He had been gone so long winter had become trapped in the house.

He dropped his bag just inside the door and walked across the parquetry to the nearest window, flinging it open to let in the warm sea air. Waves crashing on his own private beach greeted him in stereo as the sound bounced off that coming in through the open door.

That started it. A moment later he was running through the house, locks and shutters flung wide, curtains whistling in the sudden winds. Summer breezes danced through the corridors bringing with them the fresh salt air and that sense of freedom he so loved.

For a moment he simply stood in the middle of the house and listened to the sounds of his home.

He was home.

Home!

A grin spread across his face. There was no other place more etched into his reality anymore. There had been others, but now it was here in his own space that he could truly be who he was. Not Michael Long, not Michael Knight, not Michael the frickin’ elf wannabe that stupid woman had tried to convince him he could be. No, here he was Michael.

Just Michael.

And that was all he wanted to be.

Oh, Michael I miss you. ::pouts:: I left because RP was eating my life it is so damn addictive. Now I don't have time to be addicted, so I fiugre I should be safe in coming back in some capacity. I will be hopefully writing a couple of prompts for Michael in the near future and be open for some role play.

There has been a character breeding thing going on here. I dragged Michael off into my original universe burntleaves and played with him there for awhile. Since then the Michael in that universe has shed the majority of his Michael Knight characteristics and become Michael Hane, an original character in my original universe (as he was supposed to). This now leaves Michael/Michael Knight to return here and play as he pleases...and up my word count, which is pathetic at the moment.

So if anyone would like to say hi, let's just say he's been away for awhile and now he is back.

Knight was also kidnapped, but is back (his original fic version hardly resembles him at all), so poke him either here or at notwhatiam.

Of course, now Michael is as curious as all hell as to how everyone is....as am I as to how many of his old friends still exist.

For Cerridwen: a long embroidered cloak from a very far away place. Midnight blue with embroidery that shimmers in the light, also many shades of blue.
For Miri: A similar cloak to Cerridwen's except deep red almost black, similar embroidery, red, that shimmers in the light.
For Gwydyr: A song, hand scribed on vellum, that speaks of brothers, of horses, of trust and valour.
For Tadc: A book of practical jokes for the mystically inclined (or at least Michael thinks it is, he can't quite read the cover)
For Karl: A fountain pen and writing paper inscribed with his name.
For Dai: A collection of whistles from various places...from a duck caller to a small flute, a variety of musical sounds.
For Lu: Same as Sam. A tiny box, like one used for jewellery. Contains the seed pod of a great Eucalypt.
For Julien and his family: A new hat, broad brimmed and sequined in places. A bucket of chocolates for the children. An embroidered belt for Jackie.
For Michael G: A fountain pen and a journal inscribed with his name.

Waking up

It is interesting to wake up on the beach in the morning. The sun pokes up over the hills, the waves crash on the beach, a chill wind reminds you abruptly that summer is long past, and you have sand in your teeth.

Michael blinked and tear-encrusted beach fell from his eyes. He lifted his head off the sand and immediately was told by his body that it did not appreciate being held in this position too long; that it did not like the fact that it was very cold despite the blue sky, and moving was not advisable.

The realisation he was wearing only his pyjamas did little to improve the situation.

He sat up anyway and put a hand to his head. God, whatever he'd drunk last night, he really should have thought twice.

A seagull flew overhead and narrowly missed dumping guano on his head. As it was, it splashed in the sand next to him and he flinched.

Ergh.

Finally pulling together enough sense to look around, and squinting in the morning light, he looked up to find himself several hundred metres down his beach, on the other side of the stream from his house.

What the hell was he doing out here?

Memories of last night included going to bed and little else. There had been no party, no alcohol, since he barely touched the stuff nowadays anyway. There had even been a book, a rarity in itself, though its contents eluded him.

And now he was waking up on the beach.

Had he started sleepwalking? Yet another psychosis to add to his collection? He sighed and staggered to his feet. His head spun a moment, but he forced himself upright.

Whatever had happened, he needed Advil and a little less sunlight. One hand to his head and the other a little out from his body for balance, he headed back home.

Getting to the point

He first noticed it when shaving. Lathered up in front of the mirror, he pulled his hair back over one ear and stopped, staring at himself.

Had it been like that before?

…?

Come on, it couldn’t have been.

Dropping his shaver in the sink he pushed his hair away from his other ear.

The same.

He ran his fingertip across the fine point at the top of each ear.

Vulcan. Elf. What the hell was going on?

The first explanation that came to mind was Sam. Of course. But then this wasn’t quite his style. If Sam chose to do something to his ears he had no doubt that he would be more likely to resemble a rabbit or an elephant. Sam’s humour wasn’t known for its subtlety.

Mike could probably do it. Mike could pretty much do what he wanted. But again, why? It wasn’t his style either.

He ran through the list of relatives in his head. Many of them were capable…

He stared at his ears.

There was shaving cream in his hair.

He pulled his hair down, hiding his pointy ears from himself and the world. He picked the shaver up again.

He tilted his head to one side.

Perhaps he should grow a beard.

He went away. There had been no choice. Where he had gone, even he wasn't sure. There had been the Key and there had been many doors. He had just kept going.

There had been ocean, cities, other planets, realms beyond his wildest dreams, but he had kept going. Memories fell by the wayside, past hates, past loves, past hurts, so many doors and so many changes.

Several times he returned to the forest, but each time she sent him out again, looking, searching, hunting for he didn't know what.

Until he was lost.

One door too many and Michael Knight lost himself.

It wasn't a bad thing. It wasn't a good thing either. It simply happened.

Some things remained. His family, ever important, was rooted in his subconscious and he clung to it. Cerridwen, a thought away from insanity, she was there. But many, many associations were lost to memory, whether it be damaged or not.

Until he was no longer Knight.

No longer Long.

No longer anything, but simply Michael.

And then she let him come home.

Seriously, I have to say that only a fool would try to play the field all at once. I know there are societies out there that support polygamy, and I say best of luck to them if it produces mutual happiness, but for me, one woman at a time is enough.

That's not to say I haven't been tempted in the past. I will admit to that much. But thinking and doing are two very different things.

And hell, with the current state of my memory I don't think I could pull it off anyway. How does it go? 'Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.'

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid.

I believe in monogamy. Two people. Two halves of a relationship. Together for as long as it may last.

And besides, I don't like to share.

The seabreeze was a welcome caress and he closed his eyes letting it wash over him, its cool fingers tracing patterns on his cheeks. It was quiet here, finally quiet. He let out a small, equally quiet sigh.

He wasn't alone, but the other presence on his deck wasn't a concern. The two of them had mended fences for the moment. A compromise pushed by the saving of life.

And the end of another.

He could still see the red light flaring up in the AI's eyes…anger of such a depth it defied his own. Perhaps he had more reason than Michael; perhaps he had finally gained that last bit of relief two hundred odd years of unrequited loss; perhaps he had simply been in pain.

Either way, the deed was done, for good or bad. They had survived.

Language knew how to lie.

And Knight was no longer Kitt.

Not that he ever really was, just in Michael's eyes there had been that representation, a call to all the mixed and pain-filled feelings the name brought to the surface. His thoughts danced across the subject like they always did and he shifted in his seat a little uncomfortably…which in turn set off the nagging twinge in his shoulder, life's latest memo regarding his mortality.

Knight was no longer Kitt, but the core, the heart, the soul of the AI he had known was there, different, but there.

And Kitt's soul purpose had been to protect his driver…

He could still hear Knight screaming his name.

Merritt hadn't had a chance.

It was Knight's turn to shift in his seat, but Michael didn't open his eyes at the sound. The AI was content to simply sit with him and watch the sun go down. Michael had a beer in his hand and Knight a mineral water on the table.

"You okay?" The sun's last rays of warmth fought with the cool of the breeze.

"I am well. Are you in any pain?"

Michael finally blinked and opened his eyes to look at his partner, his thoughts automatically venturing towards the healing wound in his shoulder. He could almost feel Knight's sensors crawling over his body. "No. No, I'm fine."

Silence reigned for another moment and Michael returned his gaze to the ocean. "You know, it's a little ironic."

"It is? In what way?"

Michael's top lip wrinkled a little. "The test that killed Kitt was the same one you faced, yet you survived. You made the decision and Merritt got his answer."

Knight blinked calmly at him. "It was not my decision."

The former driver stared at the AI.

"It was a decision made by my designers, Michael. One that places you above all."

"I know that. The point is that you faced it and survived its consequences where Kitt did not."

"It was not the first time."

Michael swallowed, but didn't comment.

"It would be foolish to think anyone in our profession had not seen their share of death."

True. "But purposefully?"

"Lack of choice makes the choice, Michael. You know that as well as I. I've done what I've had to do and I have survived it."

"What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger?"

"No, it makes you alive. The rest is up to you."

And Michael was suddenly struck with the age of the man across the table from him. This was no naïve AI, Knight was not Kitt.

"Thank you for saving my life."

Knight didn't look at him, choosing to stare out at the ocean once more. "You are welcome."

Endings aren't always endings

He stared at the flames, his body limp and almost falling where he stood. It was over. It was finally over. Gray and Wilson were dead, gone, cinders, buried under the building currently under going cremation.

And what remained of Michael Knight was exhausted.

He didn't make a move towards the car, he just took the moments as they came and went. He had no wish to face the empty shell of the Knight Two Thousand mock-up parked a few hundred feet from him. The dashboard taunted him with its absences.

Fifteen months almost to the day. That flippant word he'd thrown Kitt's way before leaving for Silicon Valley. The last said by just himself for a very long time.

The Voices…

No, they were gone. Gone.

He scratched absently at the scars hiding the electronics in his neck, but the only warmth came from the remains of the burning building.

Hot air tangled in his hair. Sparks danced in front of him.

He should leave.

There had been pleasure, he had to admit to it. One of the very few times he had revelled in the power of the gun in his hands, eyed the dimple the barrel made in the bastard's skin, wished for and granted execution to his want. Wilson was dead.

The Voices were gone.

He could finally return to Kitt.

He didn't intentionally let out the sob, it just came.

He was going home.

Favourite retreat

The wind was blustery and loud, catching his hair and tossing tangles into his eyes. The mutter of angry ocean eating shoreline could just be heard over it as the two elements battled for aural dominance.

He needed to think and standing on the beach in winter was just the place to do it. No matter the season, he could always find some solace here. Wind, water, sun and sand - the four integral ingredients of clear thinking.

Usually he would be here with Kitt, but not this time. This time it was Kitt he needed to think about and he didn't need the AI to know.

Kitt had once asked him how much he was worth. How much the AI himself was worth. Michael hadn't given him an answer.

Not because he didn't have one, but because the answer had surprised him.

Michael Long had always been independent. He'd learnt the hard way that he could really only rely on himself. Fight his own fight, find his own way, make his own difference. A fact ever more rammed home in the birth of Michael Knight.

Until now.

Hell, he'd had partners he would have given his life for, and those that would have done the same for him, but there was something different about this relationship…and it had nothing to do with electronics.

He found himself depending on Kitt, relying on the AI in a way he had never really allowed himself to do with anyone else. The AI needed him and in return, he found he needed the AI for more than just tactical backup. He needed his nagging, his sense of humour, and his glares emanating from the dash.

Now, many people might consider him off his head in needing his car for emotional support. But then Kitt wasn't a car.

But still…

In this point in his life, it had become time to face facts. From the day he had partnered Kitt, far more had changed than his name and his face. His outlook on life and his need to cherish what moments he had.

And those he shared them with.

The surf roared and muttered, but he found it was no longer enough.

It was no longer his preferred place to be.

Mike and the ultimate

When he thought about flying, the first thing that came to mind was Mike.

This, of course, was quickly followed by thoughts of the Realm, Sam, the Lady and the general freedom the ability to fly gave him when he visited…home. That thought quickly led to the question of when he had begun calling the Realm home? But then it was possible to have two homes wasn't it? And then the beach house would beckon. Thinking could be dangerous.

But flying always brought up Mike. Perhaps it was because the man took such joy in it. Perhaps it was because his nephew was right, flying was the ultimate. Perhaps it was the grin on his face every time it was mentioned. Whichever it was, he couldn't help being caught up in Mike's enthusiasm and perhaps exhibiting a little of his own.

Jumping off the Tower at some unbelievable height was the ultimate rush. Then there was the time he'd dragged Ton into the activity. It was almost as much fun to watch the first steps of another as flying yourself. Michael idly wondered if the Lady had laughed when she threw him off the Tower for the first time. It was extremely disorienting.

But flying was the ultimate. Soaring through the clouds, dancing with Cerridwen, dancing with Sharan, dancing with the wind. Apparently there was an airborne obstacle course above the ocean. He had yet to try it, but the Lady or Sam or someone had mentioned it to him and it came to mind every now and again. Summer was well on its way and the time for beach parties was approaching…

That brought a smile. Time to poke the family. Time to party.

And introduce the concept of flying to a few more people.

[ooc note - Okay, this just turned out weird. This is the last of the !MK answers and I blame it on the topic. ::eyes RiderMun:: Yes, it is all your fault :D I had no idea where to go with it without turning it into cliché and boring. What it turned out like…well, it was supposed to be something different entirely, but for some reason that never happened. Perhaps it will, if he gets any answers. As for plans, I have none; do with it what you like, if anything. This is so meta, I'm surprised the words stick to the page. My brain is broken and I probably should have been kept away from the computer completely. Michael may never forgive me :D]

Knight had been home with his family for a while, checking on things….things being mainly Kia and Kemper - he had no idea what he had been thinking during their programming, no idea at all - but due to the case Michael and he were working on, his time had been short. He dropped the MAV down beside the Trans Am, as usual, a little uneasy about the car, despite its lack of relation to anything Knight. Jumped out, phased the vehicle and walked up to the house.

The wind was blowing a gale today, the trees around the beach house bending in the wind. He vaguely wondered if Michael had considered that factor when moving here, but then really, he couldn't imagine the man living anywhere else, bar a hurricane event. Standard scans upon approach had listed Michael as being home and the lone human occupant of the entire property - something that also provided a little comfort - no invaders and no family. Though the majority of Michael's family was pleasant enough, they still put him on edge. No, thankfully, Michael was home alone. Well, as far as he could tell. That status was prone to change at any time.

Knight let himself in, realising that Michael was not making it to the door anytime soon and, giving him the privacy he required, he placed Krystal's gift on the kitchen table and made to wait in the living room. The television was on, a current affairs program blabbering to an empty lounge chair. Several discarded garments lay on the couch itself, along with Rayne who looked up at him with some astonishment before leaping off the furniture and bounding over to him, tail wagging back and forth several times per second.

He reached down and scratched her ear, as always reminded of just what dogs had had a tendency to do to his hubcaps. But then this was Rayne. He let loose a soft harmonic purr and Rayne nuzzled up to his leg.

"Knight! Uh, hi. You're back."

The AI turned with a half smile on his face to meet his partner. "So I've discovered." But then he frowned. Michael looked awful. Pale, his usually slightly eccentric hair lank and dull, and there was the sudden fragrance of bile. "Michael, are you quite alright?" Medical scan…what had the man been up to while he was away? Couldn't leave him alone for a-

What the hell?

"Oh, I'm fine. Just caught a bit of a stomach bug. Coulda been something I ate." The tall man wandered past and dumped himself into the lounge chair with a sigh.

"Michael?" He ran the scan again. But that wasn't…possible.

"What?"

Again. Again. Same result. Perfect use of resources, management of space…impossible, but…

"Are you aware that you are pregnant?"

Michael stormed out of the Foundation's medical wing with a mixture of anger, excitement and a whole lot of confusion. Knight was still conferring with Doctor Alpert and Devon was no doubt sticking his nose into it. He hadn't wanted to come back here, but Knight had been adamant. Privacy was a major concern and the Foundation had it, unlike any other medical facility. It had been awkward. Devon had to be in the hallway at that precise moment…or there was always the possibility that Knight had phoned ahead, he wouldn't put it past him.

The weather here was just as bad as it had been at home and the wind caught and played with his hair. He shivered. He felt like crap. But considering his 'condition'…oh god…there was no surprise there.

There was only one answer to the origin of this little event - magic. The question was 'who?' Quickly followed by 'why?' What the hell was he going to tell Cerridwen? Or did she already know? Crap, he didn't even know who the mother, father, hell, the other parental body, if any, was. Immaculate conception? Oh god. Yay for the next messiah - the one that took a wrong turn on the way in.

Or it could be a joke. His eyes narrowed. A list of possible people who could have managed this. Sam? Always at the top of the list. 'Prone to pranks' was a mild descriptor for him. Dai? Not really his style. Lu? Hmm, possibly. The Riders? Tadc would certainly be up for the prank, but he wasn't too sure of his capability of pulling it off. Magic wasn't quite the Riders' favourite medium. But then they didn't have to be the executors, they had friends. But the question remained, why?

Mike? Again, there was the capability factor, but then with Mike anything was possible. One of the Ladies? Again, anything was possible, but then there was a big difference between freezing his facial expression and impregnating him.

Impregnating him. The entire concept broke something in his brain. Knight had stared at him with the strangest look. Incredulity, scientific curiosity and concern all mixed into one. Michael hadn't believed him at first. There had been shouting, mostly on his part. Knight had been his usual cool self, but then Michael could tell the whole situation disturbed the AI. Knight still wasn't comfortable with the implications of magic.

And come to think of it, if this was a side effect, Michael was none too sure himself.

Now what the hell was he going to do? He was pregnant.

Pregnant.

Oh god.

How the hell had this happened?!

As for the 'having a child' aspect of this, he didn't mind children, that wasn't too much of a problem, despite the obvious lifestyle changes. But on the rare opportunity that he might ever have any….he had expected them to appear in a much more traditional manner!

Oh, god, what was Cerridwen going to say?

Or Sam? Or Miri? There was sure to be amusement on someone's part.

But he had to find out how. And why.

Knight had let him go, but he knew the AI probably had every sensor plus some trained on him at the moment. He didn't care. Yanking out the Key, he grabbed the nearest door into the main building and stepped through to the Realm.

This was going to be humiliating, but who else could he ask?

Standing in the main hall he yelled out with his mind. [Sam? Gwydyr? Dai? Houston? We have a problem.]
