The Grand Finale
OK, I have to recommend "Waiting For Frodo" over at
ohi one last time because Deb wrapped up the series today. Do click back through the "previous entries" to see her last week worth of strips. And see the cool photo of Deb, Jodi and me -really- waiting in line for ROTK during "The Gathering of The Fellowship".
My favorite strip this week is the one where Rosie and I commiserate about what Peter Jackson did to Faramir in "The Two Towers" :). As much as I love the movies, some things can't ever be completely forgiven :). It is scary, though, how much Deb drew from real life into this strip. I saw myself more than once, sometimes almost directly quoted, especially in the characters of Rosie and Sam. Jodi and I have argued about Faramir's character in the movies more than once.
You see, Jodi came to the books from the movies and I came to the movies from the books, so our perspective on Faramir is very different. I never warmed to movie Faramir because he was so far removed from the character of book Faramir in "The Two Towers" (with the exception of his hopeless charge against Osgiliath while Pippin sings to Denethor in ROTK, which is just an amazing scene, and his scene with Boromir in the extended TTT, which is really cool, BUT both those scenes were true to book canon, as opposed to Faramir being immediately tempted by the Ring or taking pleasure in seeing Gollum beaten and smashing him against a wall later or dragging Frodo and Sam to Osgiliath, all things book Faramir would never have done).
Ahem, not that I get worked up about such things... :)
Jodi's position has always been that Faramir works just fine within the framework of the movies, that his scene where he's rejected by his father is heart-breaking and moving and not to mention that the actor is hot besides.
We've learned to agree to disagree. Besides I think Aragorn and Eomer make finer movie eye candy than Faramir, anyway :). There wasn't nearly enough Eomer in the trilogy. And I'm speaking in totally literary terms there. Um, yeah.
Which is all a very lengthy way of observing that I've always been amused to see such discussions leak their way into "Waiting For Frodo", watching Deb hold up a cartoon mirror on herself and her friends through Sam and his friends. Thanks for a fun three years, Deb. I've truly enjoyed identifying with Sam as he waited in line for LOTR.
Still, one loose thread troubles me. Do Sam and Gladys and Pippin now walk off into the sunset together? Do they? Deb has left it open-ended, so I guess I can imagine they did.
