Happy Birthday, Steve and Dave!
Happy, happy birthday to two of my favorite filk people,
tarkrai and
decadentdave!
Memories of Steve:
- I first met Steve at Confusion in Michigan in 1994. It was Urban Tapestry's first American convention. I was blown away by his talent and voice. Steve is still one of my favorite people to share a filk circle with.
- Steve knows better than anyone I know that the best way to keep me in a filk circle or lure me into a filk circle is to play something by The Beatles. Steve is very good at playing Beatle songs.
- Steve was one of UT's Interfilk mentors. He was the Interfilk guest at ConChord in LA in 1993 and Urban Tapestry were the Interfilk guests at ConChord in LA in 1994. I remember sitting in a hotel room with him as we picked his brain for everything he could tell us about California cons and how to be a good guest.
- Steve gave me one of the best pieces of advice I've ever been given in filk. I thanked him once for the promotion he gave UT in our earliest days, passing our music on to folks who offered us some of our earliest concerts. He said the best way to thank him was to pass the encouragement on, help mentor other new filkers and promote their music. I hope we've managed to do that through the years.
Have the best of days, Steve!
Memories of Dave:
- One of my earliest personal memories of Dave is when he sat in with a very wide-eyed Urban Tapestry while we were practising for our concert at WorldCon in Winnipeg in 1994. We were really honoured when he offered to play with us during our concert, whoa! He played guitar on two of our songs that day.
- Memories of Dave are always tied up with memories of visiting the Bhigg House in Winnipeg. Dave's home is warm, rambling and always full of an assortment of friendly and talented people. I wrote a song once about visiting the Bhigg House- it's one of the coolest places on earth.
- One of my favorite memories of Dave is the day the two of us went to Baker Street in London, England in February 2000. Two Canadians exploring the legendary streets of London town- we had the best of times. I still have a photo of Dave and I sitting in Sherlock Holmes' study, him wearing a bowler and me wearing a deerstalker cap.
- Another favorite memory of Dave is sitting beside him at the banquet at FilKONtario 1999 when it was announced that he was being entered into the Filk Hall of Fame. Some of the words from my nomination were in his citation and I was so pleased and I cried and hugged him lots.
Have a fabulous birthday, Dave!
So, filkers out there, tell me one of your favorite memories about Steve or Dave.
