John and I went out to see "Master and Commander" tonight. Unfortunately, the line-ups were crazy and the movie tickets machines that take your bank card (which often lets you bypass that line-up) were down, which just added to the chaos. We decided to wait and try for "M&C" again tomorrow afternoon, so more on that in a later entry.
cadhla isn't the only one happy to see the new Harry Potter trailer out there:
I stumbled onto it accidentally on-line last week and the darker tone and style taken by new director Alfonzo Cuaron look great to me. Love the Hogwarts school choir featured in the clip and the many glimpses of Gary Oldman's Sirius Black. Notice they're still keeping Remus Lupin under wraps, though. "Prisoner of Azkaban" is my favorite of the HP books, introducing several of my favorite characters (Black, Lupin), as well as a darker atmosphere and a more mature storyline. Looking forward to the movie's debut on June 4th a bunch and I'll probably make it another school trip for my Gr. 5 class. Might as well enjoy it, I certainly will never be able to do books 4 or 5 as class novel studies.
Other anticipated movies... Looks like the holiday season will be a good time for the fantasy genre.
We're four weeks away from "Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King" and three days away from the extended DVD of "Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers". Enough said.
I've been curious all year about the new live movie version of "Peter Pan" coming out this December. I loved the book when I was young and it would be great to see a movie able to capture the dark edge of the book in the way no other cinematic or TV version of "Peter Pan" has. Advanced trailers and movie tie-in books are lowering my expectations, though. Everything looks a tad too slick and clean, the kids look like something out of boy band videos. Hmmm... I'll likely still go see it, Jacob Isaacs should make a cool Captain Hook, but I'll be interested to see what the reaction is to that movie.
Very pleased and intrigued to see the great advanced reviews Tim Burton is getting for his new December movie, "Big Fish". Several critics are giving the movie dark horse chances to be on the Best Picture Oscar ballot this year and to be able to keep my fingers crossed this year for both Tim Burton and Peter Jackson would make me very happy. They say "Big Fish" tones down Burton's weirdness factor quite a bit and I'm willing to wait and see if this is a good thing or not, I'm rather fond of Burton's weirdness factor. Still, it's Burton's artistic vision that will have me in-line December 10. That, plus, one of the stars is Ewan McGregor, mmm, yeah.
Not all is rosy in the world of holiday fantasy films, though. Please wake me when the scary "Cat In The Hat" phenomenon goes away. John and I were in a gaming store today. Beside the cash counter there was a large, flat cardboard box. Scrawled on the box was "Cat in the Hat standee. Someone may take for free. Please.".
John and I also gave a miss to "Matrix Revolutions". We just couldn't muster up enough interest to get into the van and go see it. It's not that I dislike it, I'm just indifferent to it, as the second movie didn't impress me at all. We'll likely rent the third one on DVD eventually.
Question: Which upcoming movies are you most looking forward to seeing?
