Literary Question

Last night in a letter from my mother she told me that my aunt's grand-daughter (um, my second-cousin?) is taking an advanced Gr. 7 English course. As part of that course she has to read two novels that are at least 500 pages each. My mother was asking me if I could recommend any youth novels to be read by a twelve-year-old that are over 500 pages. She's already read the Harry Potter books.

A more challenging question than I first thought! I own about three shelves of excellent youth fiction that I could have gladly recommended, except most of those books are between 200 and 400 pages in length. I think it's silly the teacher has chosen an arbitrary page number to restrict the students' reading, as it doesn't vouch for the quality of the literature, but that is the criteria.

So, can you think of any youth novel (or youth-friendly adult novel) over 500 pages that you would recommend would be a good read for a twelve-year-old? I'll pass your advice back over to my Mum.
