Rogers Reservoir and American Splendor
Thought John was going to be out all day today, but his plans got changed late last night so we hung out, instead.
Started off with our morning weekend ritual at Tim Horton's and then travelled north of Newmarket to go walking on the trails at Rogers Reservoir. We'd been to those trails once before and we weren't too impressed, but we were looking for some place not too far away. The last time we went it was damp and buggy, but today it was warm and pleasant and we enjoyed the walk along the creek a lot. We saw a turtle sunning itself on an old tire. He was still there when we came back around again, but he got scared away by a fly-by blue heron. Poor turtle, but I was even more excited about seeing the heron as I've never seen one in the wild before!
We travelled out to Woodbridge after that to see "American Splendor" at the AMC theatres. Despite the critics raves I found the movie uneven. There were parts that I really enjoyed a lot and parts that made me really restless. It took the film about half an hour to take off, only after Harvey Pecar's wife Joyce entered the scene. I've also recently had a chance to read some of the "American Splendor" anthologies Rand Bellavia lent me at WorldCon. I find
the books leave me torn, sometimes I can almost glimpse why the crtics rave about them so and sometimes they just leave me bored and baffled.
The next two movies I'm interested in seeing are "Matchstick Men" and "Secondhand Lions". Recent trailers and articles for "Calendar Girls" and Tim Burton's "Big Fish" later in the year look fun, too.
And for the rest of the day I do marking, laundry and e-mail, plus getting a good night sleep to be fresh for the Terry Fox Run in the morning.
Exercise log: 1.5 miles yesterday and 3.5 miles today taking me to 421 miles along the road. 37 miles to Rivendell.
