Got a raise this week and I'm already using it as an excuse to spend too much money. Well, a few treats, anyway, and then it's back to saving and beating down my VISA card.

Determined to get back into a serious walking routine I walked 3.5 miles tonight to Cosmos Music to buy a new capo. They didn't have the type of 12-string capo I lost at WorldCon so I upgraded to a fancy spring-working thingie. It'll probably take me a bit of time to get used to it, but it seems functional. (thanks, Paul :))

Went across the street to the bookstore and I was happy to find a hot off the press copy of Eric Walters' "Run". Eric Walters is a Canadian children's author who spoke to my Gr. 5 class earlier this year about Canadian heroes. During his talk he told the kids about the novel he had coming out in the fall called "Run". It's the fictional story of a troubled 15-year-old boy who ends up travelling across Canada as part of Terry Fox's "Marathon of Hope". All of Eric Walters' royalties will be donated to the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research and his publisher, Penguin Group, is going to match Walters' donation. I figure it will be an inspirational book to read as I lead up to my own Terry Fox Run next Sunday and I'm going to begin reading the book to my new Gr. 5 class on Monday, as well.

My last purchase of the evening I blame fully on Toronto musician Heather Dale. I first heard Heather sing and play piano at Ad Astra back in March and I really loved her music. She performed Sunday night at WorldCon, but sadly I had to get home that night and I missed hearing her play. By good fortune, though, I ran into her during Mary Crowell's concert on Saturday and was able to buy her latest CD, "May Queen" from her. Problem is, I've been far too busy to sit down by a CD player and listen to it. So I broke down tonight and bought a CD Walkman so I can listen to "May Queen" this week while I'm doing my daily walks.

Exercise log: 5 miles today taking me to 387 miles along the road. For the last two days I've been entertaining the demanding notion of trying to get myself to Rivendell by September 22, which all good Tolkien fans know is Bilbo and Frodo's birthday and also the day my walking group is opening their exchange gifts- double the reason to celebrate. Hmmm, it means in the next 17 days I need to walk 71 miles or an average of about 4 miles a day. Now, on a school day I walk 1.5 miles just coming to and from work so 4 miles a day could be doable. I need a challenge to help shake me from recent exercise doldrums and this could work. Barring weather or health complications, I'm going to go for it.
