Hectic
Whoo, this week has gotten hectic and Torcon hasn't even started yet (well, OK, it has, but I'm not there yet).
Just got back from staff meetings at school, a workshop on how to use our new digital photocopier and spending time making up my day plan for the first day of school on Tuesday. Now, I plan to take several hours to rest a bit and get packed for WorldCon, have dinner with John (who I won't be seeing until Sunday) before subwaying down to the con. I find I'm already not doing a great job in pacing myself this week and I know the con will just ramp up the activities considerably. One thing I hadn't factored in when I made five days worth of pre-WorldCon plans (including family plans) was how tiring it would be travelling between Richmond Hill and downtown TO each day. My heart-felt thanks to Paul Kwinn who did all the driving for us yesterday and made my transportation issues pretty care-free.
Paul and I met up here in Richmond Hill for brunch yesterday. We went to Wimpy's, a local spot John and I go to a lot and we had French toast and back bacon (very Canadian, eh?). Afterwards we met Deb and Phil and hung out at a local Tim Horton's. After meeting up with Lissa we rested here a bit so Paul, Lissa and Phil could get much needed Internet fixes and then we headed off to a party at Jodi's place in Newmarket.
It was great to see so many filkers at Jodi's place. It was beyond great to hear about Gary Ehrlich and Cheryl Gere's engagement! Gary and Cheryl have been vacationing here from Baltimore and Gary proposed on the top of the CN Tower, which I thought was very cool. Lots of talk at the party, great chili, and too much comparing of techie toys ("This palm pilot takes pictures, plays games, is a phone, schedules your life -and- makes coffee!" "Well, -my- palm pilot takes videos, picks up CNN, walks the dog, holds a thousand songs and hopefully won't be obsolete in three weeks." Yeah, you get the idea... :)). I also discovered hint o' lime taco chips, which could be dangerous.
We also played a game called "Apple to Apple". Now, I tend to hate party games, despise them, because most of them set out to embarrass you or make you reveal stuff you don't want to tell a room of partyers. It surprised me, though, that this game was fun and silly with lots of word play and strategy. I enjoyed it hugely. Phil and Lissa beat us all soundly, though Gary and Sheryl came pretty close.
Thanks for such a fun party, Jodi!
Tonight I head off to Torcon. Jodi and I are staying at Deb's apartment until Sunday, since Deb lives literally steps away from the con. I am -extremely- grateful to Debbie and Jeff for their hospitality in allowing me to invade their home for four days.
Now, I just need to go pack everything and sort my music to lug it all downtown and hook up with Jodi, who has the key to Debbie's apartment.
Exercise log- 1 mile so far, walking to and from school, taking me to 362.5 miles. Being that Deb's apartment, the WorldCon hotel and the filk hotel are all down the street from each other, meaning I'll do a fair amount of walking this weekend, I'm takin' my pedometer with me.
