Black-out!

Debbie, John and I woke up today to find we actually have power. Yay!

Debbie came out here for Urban Tapestry practice yesterday afternoon and then ended up stranded during the black-out since the Toronto subways were dead, the streets were nuts and she had no way to get home. Jodi, in her wisdom, never left Newmarket, though her phone was out for six hours causing Deb and I lots of concern when we couldn't get through to her (we had no idea if she had left for practice, if she was stranded in traffic, or what).

We went for a long walk in our neighbourhood, instead, a walk I'll remember for a long time. It was so strange to be walking through a Toronto-area neighbourhood, along Yonge St., etc. in the absolute dark. A couple of feisty variety stores and pizza shops were open, lit by candles with long line-ups waiting for food. The only lights were from the cars on the roads. The strongest memory though was the -stars-. With all the lights of the city out the stars were more brilliant out here than I've ever seen them in the city. People were stopping in their tracks and standing in their front yards watching the sky.

Things are still far from normal here, though power did return to us around 5 am. News reports tell us that the Toronto subways are still out, so Deb has to contact Jeff soon to figure out what they are going to do for the day. John isn't sure if he'll be going to work since the news reports are saying that people in non-essential jobs should stay home (he works for a video store company). Seems some areas still don't have power and we're being warned our power is still precarious. And, of course, many gas stations are still shut down or without power so many people don't have gas for their cars. Deb just got off the phone with Jeff now and he doesn't have enough gas at this point to come and get her and there are no gas stations in their area open, so she's still stranded up in the northlands with us.

At least we have TV news and coffee now to keep us amused. Looking forward to reading everybody else's black-out tales!
