ConCertino 2012- Part 1
Deb, Jodi and I were part of the Canadian Invasion that made its way down over the border to the Boston area this weekend past for ConCertino. I don't get to the East Coast filkcon very often as it usually takes place just as school is ending for the year, but I was very glad to make it down this year.
Sure enough, though, it was the -very- weekend after school finished for the year, so I went into work on Friday to close down my classroom and do assorted admin stuff, left at 1:00, packed like a maniac and ran off to the airport to meet Deb for our evening flight to Boston (Jodi and her husband, James, made a vacation of the trip and drove down).
Flight went smoothly and all was well, though sadly we didn't get in until 11:30, so we missed all the programming on the first night of the con. What with taking a car, then a bus, then a plane, then a shuttle, to get to the con hotel, we were plenty tired and pretty outraged when the hotel told us they didn't have a room for us! Seems someone didn't leave the night before and Deb and I were the last guests to arrive for the evening, so we were told we simply didn't have a room. The hotel was insisting we had to go down the road to stay in a different hotel, instead, despite the fact that Debbie had been given a confirmation from the hotel just the night before and we had commitments that night to practices, etc.. We were very, very unhappy.
That's when guardian angels Roberta Rogow and Jane Sibley stepped in. They heard the to-do at the front desk and when they learned what was happening they insisted on giving up their solo rooms and moving in together so Deb and I could have a room. Such a very generous gesture! Roberta said, "We are all fen together and we must support each other.". We are still so incredibly grateful. The hotel set it up and comped each of us one night at the hotel and gave us vouchers for the brunch buffet for our whole stay.
Thank you so much, Roberta and Jane. We will pass your kindness forward. Give the two of them a hug for us next time you see them at a con, OK? And support their tables in the Dealers Room.
We didn't have much energy left for much after that, but we did meet up with Randy, Kira and Rand to practice a song for Randy and Kira's Toastmaster concert the next day, as well as saying a few hellos before we crashed.
Yay, we were at ConCertino and we had a hotel room and there was lots of fun to come. In Part 2.
I didn't take many photos at the con, but the few I have are here. Deb has said I can borrow some of hers for future reports, too, so I will and thank you, Deb.
More later.
