Pinterest

When Pinterest was first all the rage I went over there and set myself up a page, but it never really engaged me fully, so I left the board there but never learned how to pin anything onto it.

About a month ago, on a whim, I decided to go check out the page again. That time I actually decided to download the "Pin It" button that allows you to pin pictures on your page. And then I set up a "hiking" board and a "craft" board and tried pinning some pictures. Huh, it proved to be very easy and fun, too, so over a week or so of playing about I set up boards for books, movies, convention photos, TV and started filling them up with favorite photos. It's pretty cool that there is a search function that allows you to put in words like "Tolkien" which will then show you lots of pictures other people have pinned to their boards that you can then "re-pin" and put into one of your boards. Anytime someone repins from your boards you get a notice so if you are inclined you can go and check out that person's boards as well, which is a good way to find kindred spirits on Pinterest.

I was kind of sad at first because very few people were "friending" my page, but then I discovered that rather than linking to your whole page people are much more likely to link to your individual boards, like crafters linking to my craft board or teachers linking to my "school" board, so I am getting many more links to individual boards than to my entire page.

And, holy cow, there are a lot of teachers on Pinterest! I wouldn't have seen the website at first as a career tool, more as something mindless and fun, but searches on "school ideas" or "elementary grade art" calls up tons of photos of excellent classroom projects and ideas many of which I have pinned to my school board to use in the future. This is proving to be such a cool teacher reference that I think when I have more time in the summer I may split my school board up further into "art ideas", "language ideas", "science ideas", etc.. And I have added some pictures of school ideas of my own that have already been repinned by several teachers and I'm going to continue to do that.

And, man, Pinterest can be addictive. How did I get from 0 pins to 355 pins in less than a month??? I don't even want to know...

Anyway, my Pinterest page is at http://pinterest.com/allisondurno/ if you're interested in checking out some or all of it. If you have your own page feel free to link to me and I will link back.
