FilKONtario 22- Sunday

Thanks to those of you who have left such nice comments about these con reports! What with my cyber life straddling LiveJournal and Facebook (though I prefer living at LJ), I’m never quite sure who is seeing these reports :). Nice to know some people are reading!

My thanks to Phil Mills for letting me borrow his photos. All credited photos are his, the rest are mine. You can find his whole set of photos here.

Let’s finish this up.

Getting up Sunday was a little harder as Jodi and I had stayed up singing until 3 am the night before. Still we managed to meet Walter, Erin and Rand for breakfast just before the buffet shut down.

Went from there to the Dealer’s Room where I bought Debs and Errol's new CD and a lovely pin and pendant hand-made by Teresa Kintner Gunderson. FKO was also selling surprise grab bags for $3 (pay your money, take your chances) and the intrigue was to hard to resist :). I sat in the hall and went through it and was highly amused by how random the items were- a tin of mints, a stuffed puppy, a neon orange golfball. I was so tickled that I gave Erin three bucks and convinced her to go get a grab bag, too :). Among the items in her bag was a New York keychain, which seemed rather appropriate.

Before the Filk Hall of Fame concert started we had the first appearance of the FKO Filk Youth Choir, a group of kids from Children’s Programming singing “The Hockey Monkey Song”. So very cute! I turned to Rand and commented that I bet he and Adam had -no idea- where James Kochalka’s song would go first time they chose to sing it at an OVFF circle all those years ago :).

Filk Hall of Fame Concert

(Gundo and Gary sing "Hyperion")

Tom and Gary were the featured singers in the Filk Hall of Fame concert, singing five songs each, and Persis had selected five songs that would be sung in her honour. The Filk Hall of Fame concert is always an excellent, emotional ride through the filk careers of the new inductees, as they highlight filksongs that are important to them.

Filk Hall of Fame Concert

Songs sung for Persis included Kathy Mar singing “Velvet”, Judith singing “X Libris”, Gary performing "Shrink Wrap Blues", and Rennie on "Rounds".

Tom was flanked by the two most important people in his musical life- Sue Posteraro on one side (yay, Stone Dragons!) and Dave Clement on the other (yay, Dandelion Wine!). His songs included stirring versions of “Circles In The Grain”, “Face on Mars”, “Shepherd Moon” and, of course, “Gone Filkin’”.

Gary started off with his popular “Sedona” and went through “I Just Love Tim Burton Movies” and "Come Travel With Me". He also invited Jodi and I up on the stage with him to sing “Face to Face”, a song UT had added vocal and flute harmonies to for his upcoming CD. And it was so very touching, because even though Gary kept his cool with an engineer’s precision during his Hall of Fame speech at the banquet the night before, the sentiments of friendship and healing in “Face to Face” made him emotional, to the point where he finally abandoned his guitar and sang with his heart alone (plus Jodi and me). Such a sweet memory.

As always, Jodi and I were honoured to close FKO out with “Home to FilKONtario”, singing with the entire concom.

Final Jam

Walter was awesome enough to offer me a ride home and not having to run the gamut of public transit meant I got to spend a few extra hours at the con. Thanks, Walter! I sat in on the final Filk Preserve and accompanied Karen on the lovely “I Am Stardust” and accompanied Kira and Randy on the... umm... lovely(?) Gilligan’s Island parody of “The Lady”. Walter and I joined Judith, Dave, Trace and Kathleen for dinner at Kelsey’s and then I headed for home.

Wonderful weekend. Wonderful memories.

(Tim and Annie Walker at OVFF 2008)

GoH for next year’s FKO will be Tim and Annie Walker and if you’ve seen them on stage before you’re already booking your tickets and if you haven’t seen them on stage, well, go book your tickets now. You’ll be blown away- trust me. Filk Waifs are Rand and Erin Bellavia and how cool is that? It will be Erin’s first guest gig and I can’t wait. Interfilk guest will be Katt McConnell, and though we haven't met the Youtube clip below suggests she will be a fun person to get to know.

See you all there!
