FilKONtario 22- Saturday Night

Somewhere in the late afternoon during the concerts Walter showed up, so we went to get ready for the banquet and then headed down together. I ended up sitting beside Ellen Kranzer, where the two of us laughed about actually being able to relax and eat at the banquet this year :)(we were both inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame last year). But it did make me more aware there were a handful of other people in the room sweating out those last few minutes before going up to become the newest inductees!

First inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame was Persis Thorndike, who, almost appropriately, couldn't make it to FKO this year because she was volunteering for yet another event and activity that she is passionate about :). Spencer got up to recieve her plaque for her and he gave a moving speech, part his feelings about Persis now being a member of the Hall of Fame as well as him and part an e-mail acceptance from Persis herself.

The next inductee was Gary Elhrich, which made me so very happy :). Jodi and I already knew about Gary because he had asked us to accompany him in a song for the Filk Hall of Fame concert on Sunday.

One Shots

(Gary at the one shots on Saturday afternoon.)

But it let me experience one of the very good reasons why it can be so satisfying to send in nominations for the Filk Hall of Fame! We filkers all like to have our words immortalized in the filk community, right? The Filk Hall of Fame citations give us all a chance to do that in a very cool way. Dave Hayman has always said that the citations written for the Filk Hall of Fame inductees comes straight from nominations sent in, and sure enough it was true. I had sent in a nomination for Gary, amongst others who did the same, and as sweet as it was to see a well-deserving friend get his due, it was even better to hear some of the sentences from the nomination I wrote read out in his citation! It made me very pleased and proud. I'd turn to Jodi and say, "That's my QUOTE." :). Want to have that same feeling of satisfaction? Keep sending Dave in those nominations! I'm already trying to think of who I can nominate this year.

The last inductee, Tom Jeffers, was a lovely moment indeed. Not only is he a fellow Toronto filker, but like so many other filkers I've known Tom for years, participated with him in more circles and concerts than I can think of, attended filks in his home, shared moments on each other's CDs. Tom is one of those quiet, but indispensible, filkers who is always there for the filk community to play back-up when you need it (and no one does it better), to hand you a rose when you come off the concert stage, to make us smile when he risks Sue's wrath yet one more time by adopting yet another stringed instrument :). So it was emotional to see him up there and even though I'd decided to relax and let Walter take all the Hall of Fame photos I had to run upstairs into the balcony of the banquet room and take a few photos of Tom accepting his award.

I didn't get a chance to get down for the songwriting contest or the auction, but the auction raised over $4000 (!!!) for Interfilk and FKO, which made a lot of people very happy. The highest selling item was for a chance to be a character in one of Tanya Huff's upcoming books.

Saturday Night Filk

There were three lively filk circles going on Saturday night and Jodi and I managed to get to two of them before fading out. The first one was in the banquet room and we sang with Kira and Randy, Morva and Alan, Erin and Rand, Dave, Kathleen, Keith, Eloise, among others.

Rand duets with an absent Adam

(Fun moment. Rand was singing a new duet he usually does with Adam. He sang both parts and had Erin hold up the sign when he was singing Adam's part. Hey, did you know the two people in this photo are the Filk Waifs at next year's FKO? It's true!)

Great fun, and then we moved down the hall to participate in a second circle with Jane and Phil, Dave C., Tom and Sue, Gundo, Bill, the Interfilk guests, Gary E., Jan, Ellen, among others. I especially liked hearing Gundo play keyboards and harmonica and sing Pink Floyd and I got to keep a promise to Dave to sing at least -one- Simon and Garfunkel song with him!

More to come.
