FilKONtario 22- Friday Night
A most excellent FilKONtario- I had a great time! It was a bit sad for Jodi and me at first, as it is the only FKO that we’ve ever been at without Debbie, but scheduling conflicts are in the hands of the fates and we can only keep our fingers crossed that FKO and the game boarding con Deb attended this weekend won’t overlap too often. Deb will be at FKO next year as Urban Tapestry celebrates our 20th Anniversary (holy cow).
(Aside: For reasons I can't figure out, Flickr is no longer allowing me to embed a photo into the top of a LJ post. Can't sort out why, so all photos are going under the cut in these con reports.)
My thanks to Phil Mills for letting me borrow his FKO photos for these posts. Any credited photos are his. You can find his entire set of FKO photos here
John was working on Friday so I had the adventure of bussing from Richmond Hill to Mississauga with guitar and suitcase and satchel- yay, fun. But I did discover an awesome 20 minute airport express bus that goes from Richmond Hill to Pierson Airport which could be very useful in the future. Jodi and I had dinner at the hotel restaurant and then headed in for the evening concerts.

First up was past-conchair Sue Posteraro, who performs with the best-terrific local talent and the ever wonderful Dandelion Wine. Her Farscape song was lovely and it’s always fun to hear her sing Scott Snyder’s “Secrets”. The whole set was a great way to kick off FKO.

Heather Dale and Ben Deschamps were up next. Last time I saw Heather and Ben perform was on a live computer stream from Mike and Anne Whittaker’s living room in England a few weeks back. So cool. Gotta love modern technology. Heather mostly did songs from her new FairyTale CD, as well as “Joan” and the ever-rousing sing-a-long “Stone Soup”. She and Ben were joined on stage by Alexander James Adams on the fiddle and how amazing was that? Heather, Ben and Alexander on stage together. FKO was the place to be.

Alexander took the stage on his own after that (with some bodhran help from Heather) and blew us all away with extraordinary fiddle playing. Lord above. He also brought some recorded backing instrumental tracks that the sound crew fired up and we were entranced by his awesome vocal skills, as well.
Speaking of recorded instrumental tracks I found that to be quite a trend at FKO this year. Perhaps it’s been like that at other cons for awhile, but I haven't been to a lot of cons recently. This is the first time I’ve noticed it as influential as it was. I found it quite fascinating, how it helped vocalists who weren’t instrumentalists (on stage and in circles), how it added extra depth to performers who were instrumentalists and how in one case, at the Filk Hall of Fame concert, it saved the day :). But more on that later.
I was tired Friday night, full day of teaching and bussing to the con, so Jodi and I passed out early. We wanted to be able to stay up late Saturday night.
Here's my favorite photo from FKO this year :). It was taken on Saturday afternoon, but I'm sticking it here. It's taken by Jodi Krangle:

More to come.
