Soapstone Carving
Yay, I'm very happy with the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto right now. We have the two Gr. 4 classes booked in for a class trip next Friday in connection with our Rocks and Minerals unit in Science. The students have a classroom lesson at the museum first where they get lots of hands-on experience with rocks and a chance to do experiments and observations. Then a guide tours them through the Rocks and Minerals exhibit in the museum giving them lots more information.
That's pretty much what we had paid for. Then we have lunch in the museum cafeteria, split the students into small groups to see one or two more exhibits of their choice and then bus back to school.
Today the woman who runs the education department at the ROM called to ask me if I would like an additional arts lesson that would also be connected into the Rocks and Minerals theme. She said it's an experimental program the museum is piloting and as a result we would get the lesson for free with teachers being asked to fill in evaluation forms at the end. She says she'll give the students a lesson on soapstone carving. Sounds very cool and very Canadiana :).
Should be a good day!
