Good Night, Sarah Jane
Passing along this poignant, sweet song by Talis Kimberley to all on my list who may be Doctor Who fans, but may not be connected into the filk world to have heard it elsewhere:
Good Night, Sarah Jane
Like so many North American Who fans I connected into the universe in the 70s with the fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith. And as much as I liked her back then when I was a teenager I think I indentified with her even more as a grown woman when Sarah Jane returned and reunited with the tenth Doctor. "School
Reunion" was so haunting and bittersweet and Sarah-Jane more than ever represented everything it meant to want to fly away in the TARDIS- the joys and sorrows, the risks and the wonders of being a Companion of the Doctor. And it made me see Rose with new eyes and I remember one of my strongest regrets as Rose finished her adventures with the Doctor was that she wouldn't be able to take Sarah Jane up on her offer to find her again once she, too, found herself dealing with an earth-bound life again (maybe Rose found an alternate Sarah Jane :)).
I gather Sarah Jane dealt well with an earth-bound life, though. I haven't seen "The Sarah-Jane Adventures" yet, but I may take them on as a summer project.
The science fiction spaces on the Internet have felt gentle and sad for the last day. Still as lonely as it is that Lis Sladen is gone so unexpectedly, it's been a wonder to see and read about how Sarah-Jane Smith touched so many lives.
