Listens: Amy's fiddle

Saturday at FKO

Again please note, all photos here are by Walter unless otherwise said. You can see his set of FKO photos here.

Next morning we headed down and had brunch in the hotel with Walter and Deb’s husband, Jeff, before Deb and Jodi left with Howard to go work on music for a “secret Sunday project”.

Karen

Concerts started up again at 1:00. First up was FKO’s Filk Waif, Karen Linsley. I was lucky enough to have seen Karen in concert when she was guesting at SFContario here in Toronto last November. She had the same helper musicians up on stage with her at FKO- Phil on guitar, Tom on accordian and various string thingies, Howard on percussion and Peggi on back-up vocals. Great fun concert with songs that ranged from the heart-felt, like “The Road To Roswell”, to the silliness of “Nobody Knows That I’m Really An Alien”.

Talis

Next up was Talis Kimberley, who we were lucky enough to have here from England. She performed her set with Dave Clement and they did some wonderful duets. The one that stands out in my mind as being particularly lovely was “Lady Moon”. Talis is just always such a dramatic emotional performer. I loved hearing her sing her original version of “Still Catch The Tide”.

Ghost of A Rose

After that were the Interfilk Guests, Ghost of A Rose, from Texas: Dene Foye (with his cool double-necked guitar), Sundara, and William Boatman on cello. They performed many songs new to our area, songs that were funny and spooky and dramatic. Lovely vocals and the cello threaded throughout was really gorgeous.

And then there was Wild Mercy- whooo! The group was made up of Barry and Sally Childs-Helton (guitar and percussion), Debbie Gates (keyboards), Jen Midkiff (Harp and bass), and Amy McNally (fiddle) and they brought the house down. Just a fantastic, varied show with songs by members of the group and other filkers, too. I enjoyed the songs I knew by Seanan McGuire, as well. Terrific musicianship and infectious energy and I loved the vibe between the five of them. Fun times.

And it's just about here that I want to do my part to bring back the "Let's do what we can to get Amy McNally back on the ballot for a Best Performer Pegasus Award". Amy was just extraordinary in the Wild Mercy concert. Amy was so restrained and generous in the gorgeous fiddle music that she used to enhance so many FKO concerts this year (Mary, Stone Dragons, Wild Mercy, Ellen Kranzer, Urban Tapestry, etc.) that when she is really given a chance to let loose, like she did in the guest of honour concert, you sit up dazzled, it's an amazing thing to hear. Yay, Amy!

After the concerts we ran off to get ready for the FKO Banquet and our induction into the Filk Hall of Fame :).

More to come.
