Weekend Stuff

So, what have I been up to this weekend?

- Went to see "Across The Universe" on Friday night. It was colourful and interesting throughout, but I can't say I really recommend it. For those of you, like me, who say "It's a musical of Beatle music- I'm there regardless", go for it, but be prepared to take the very cliched 1960s story with a huge grain of salt. John was disappointed by the visuals, though I thought there were some scenes that worked well. I was especially struck, though, how those Beatle songs still sound fresh and relevant and joyous and moving fifty years after they were first released. Also, based on the reaction to the audience I was in on Friday, I think this movie may end up appealing more to a young generation as opposed to the Baby Boom generation you might expect a movie like this to be aimed at.

- Went out to IKEA on Saturday morning and bought a new futon matress for the futon in the living room. We still need to find a decent futon cover. Choice was rather scarce at IKEA. Also found a laptop lap desk that doesn't cut into my legs the way my present crafter lap desk does when I put the heavy laptop on it. Also bought a rustic little hiker's camera bag for the new camera. I like it a bunch.

- Came home and made African Curry in the crockpot. Pretty much just a variation on chili using curry. I served it on rice and it was yummy.

- Started a new cross-stitch shirt to work on through the fall. It is purple. It has bats on it. It's shaped like a geometric circle. It's nifty.

- We watched several episodes from the Season 1 box set of "Heroes" last night. Man, what a great show. We're building up near the climax of the season now, being that we're trying to get through all the episodes before the new season begins on September 24 and I'll be in Rochester next weekend. Watched the episode "Company Man" last night, where we get the background to Bennett's character, and just cried. Such a good episode. Ya know, that guy should be up for an Emmy tonight. Not that Hiro isn't fun and worthy and all, but Bennett's character is so much more subtle and shows such interesting shades of gray. I'd love to see "Heroes" steal the Best Drama Series honours away from "The Sopranos" tonight on the Emmy Awards. Doubt that's going to happen, though.

- And, hey, we had a $50 winning Crossword scratch ticket last night- yay. We ended up buying six more $3 tickets (and only winning $3 from that whole batch...) and pocketing a twenty each. (You see, we also had a $3 and a $5 winner to go with the $50 winner.)

- Today I'm going to do laundry, catch up on some school unit plan work and watch the Emmys.
