I watched the final episode of "Blake's 7" this morning...
... and I sat here alone in my apartment and cried.
It was such a hopeless way for the series to end.
It was the only way this series could have ended.
The revelation hit me about a third of the way into Series 4- I suddenly knew that with the grim reality of the series and the appalling attrition rate throughout that none of the main characters were going to make it out of this show alive.
So during that final episode I was just waiting to see how they were all going to die. And waiting to see "bounty hunter" Blake redeemed or explained, which was the one silver lining of the episode.
But until very shortly before it happened I didn't see that Avon was going to kill Blake. That really was heartbreaking.
And that final image of Avon before the fade to black? Yeah, just... whoa.
I can -only- imagine what a commotion this episode must have caused when it first aired :).
I read an off-hand comment in cadhla's journal the other day from autographedcat that he was one of the few people who liked the ending of "Blake's 7". You can add me among that number, too. Again, as mentioned above, everything about the spirit and atmosphere of the show, at least from the third season on, projected that ending and made it seem inevitable. It was shocking, emotional and for a series of continuing characters we've become attached to, powerfully nihilistic. It will stay with me for a long time to come.
But I can also appreciate why a lot of people probably hated it :).
And I'm sure a lot of people have the back-stage scoop of what caused the creators and writers to pen and film such an extreme closing episode to their show, but I thought it fit organically with what came before, it worked for me and it still has me shaken.
I'm very glad I've finally had the chance to watch "Blake's 7".
For those of you who have seen the series I'd be very curious to know your reactions to that final episode.
And now that the spoiler warnings are off I'd be curious to know anything you'd like to say regarding "Blake's 7". I'll be off to the Internet in the next few days to look up some of the series' background info and fan reaction for myself.
