Luminato in Toronto
Yay, I have Chicken Curry cooking in a crockpot right now. I have never made Chicken Curry before! Hope it turns out OK. I cut back a bit on the spices because I'm afraid it might be too hot for me. I can adjust the spices accordingly next time I make it. Have I mentioned recently how much I love my crockpot?
John and I spent yesterday checking out various sites of the Luminato arts festival presently taking place in Toronto. We had a great day and it helped me fall in love with the city all over again.
(Photo: I couldn't resist this goofy photo op at the "Summer of Love" festival in Yorkville. This particular display was hosted by Loreal, one of the sponsers of the day, thus the slogan on the side of the bus...)

We started our afternoon in Yorkville for Luminato's "Summer of Love" festival. We were a bit disappointed that the fest wasn't a bit more extensive than it was, with more demos, vendors, booths, etc., but there were big crowds getting into the spirit of the day. Lots of neon colours and tye-dye, lots of women wearing flowers in their hair, lots of fun music. There was an interesting memorabilia room with posters, photos, newspaper articles, performers, etc. from Yorkville's music past. The Loreal booth offered tattoos, body painting and 60s hairdos. Music played on the main street stage throughout the afternoon.

Luminato festival volunteers passed out brochures and got into the spirit of the day. Other folk passed out flowers for people to wear in their hair. It was fun to travel to other places downtown during the day and see people still wearing flowers in their hair and knowing we'd all been to Yorkville. I wore my flower for the rest of the day, too.

More local colour at Yorkville's "Summer of Love". Ironically, though, those "protest" signs are advertising a hair salon and a clothing store. I'm amused to see that this photo has gotten the most hits of all my Luminato photos so far. Think those outfits might have something to do with it? (or, like me, maybe people are just trying to figure out what the signs say)

Another part of the Luminato festival was the official opening of the "Chin-Lee Crystal", the new and very modern extension of the Royal Ontario Museum. There was lots of action on the street as they set up lights, cameras and bleachers for the very impressive-looking presentation in the evening.
While I'm linking to other people's Luminato photos I'd like to show a few photos of what I think is one of the most beautiful and impressive displays during the festival so far. It's called Pulse Front and it's art created by giant spotlights being aimed at the sky. It's made for some really wonderful photos like these here, here, here and here. I love how the cityscape becomes part of the art.

A flower from the "Summer of Love" contrasts with 2007's Lee-Chin Crystal.

In the early evening John and I walked over to Queen's Park to check out the Muhtadi International Drumming Festival, also part of Luminato. Huge fun, great energy. There were drumming performances and workshops going on all over the park, as well lots of craft vendors and outdoor food booths, most with an African flavour. Very big crowds, which made it hard to get near the stage for photos.

I bought a t-shirt with cool drummers and dancers circling the bottom of the shirt. I also bought a small wire copper ring at one of the craft booths. I love copper jewelry.
Terrific day. It's so much fun exploring Toronto events during the summer.
