Oscar Guesses Revisited
Sixteen of twenty-one guesses correct. I could have been a contender in an Oscar pool.
Best Picture- Babel
Nope. "The Departed" surprised a lot of people, and rode in on the Scorsese wave.
Best Director- Martin Scorsese
Yup. Bringing out that triumverate of directors to present foreshadowed the Scorsese win quite handily, didn't it?
Best Actress- Helen Mirren
Yup. Pretty much a given.
Best Actor- Forest Whitaker
Yup. And another given.
Best Supporting Actress- Jennifer Hudson
Yup. I was really happy about this win.
Best Supporting Actor- Alan Arkin
Yup. I thought Eddie Murphy might have gotten the last laugh on me, and I would have been happy if he had won.
Best Animated Movie- Cars
Nope. An upset here. Haven't seen "Happy Feet" yet. I'll borrow it when it comes out on DVD.
Best Art Direction- Pan's Labyrinth
Yup. The violence has kept me away from this one, but I'm glad it picked up a few awards.
Best Cinematography- Pan's Labyrinth
Yup. People just kept raving about how beautiful the fantasy sequences in this movie looked.
Best Costume Design- Marie Antoinette
Yup. When in doubt, always go with the period piece for costume awards. The more elaborate, the better.
Best Long Documentary- An Inconvenient Truth
Yup. You go, Al Gore. Wow, was he ever treated like royalty at the Oscars last night, eh? And stop trying to convince him to run for US president, everyone. He'll get -so- much more done for the environment NOT being president.
Best Film Editing- Babel
Nope. Though I was happy for the woman from "The Departed" who did win.
Best Foreign Language Film- Pan's Labyrinth
Nope. Totally thought this one was sewn up, but the German film world had other ideas :).
Best Make-up- Pan's Labyrinth
Yup. Pretty much another given based on the astonishing creatures in the clips I've seen.
Best Song- Listen (though I'm cheering for Melissa Etheridge)
Nope. Man, I should have gone with my first instinct and supported Melissa! Definitely the great surprise of the night- I cheered from my couch :). The one category I was most glad to be wrong in.
Best Score- Babel
Yup. Seemed like it might have a serious, complex score.
Best Sound Editing- Letters From Iwo Jima
Yup. Common wisdom is when in doubt always go with the war movie for best sound.
Best Sound Mixing- Dreamgirls
Yup. Always go with the war movie, unless there is a musical in the mix.
Best Visual Effects- Pirates
Yup. Sea monsters win all.
Best Adapted Screenplay- The Departed
Yup. I just thought they might want to give "The Departed" another award besides Best Director. Little did I know... :)
Best Original Screenplay- Little Miss Sunshine
Yup. It's just been such a popular feel good movie and rather an Oscar break-through as far as comedy movies are concerned.
So, I got 16 out of 21. Not bad at all.
