UK Filkcon Memories

This is the weekend of the annual UK filkcon. This year the filkcon is called the D'Zenove Convention and it's in Basingstoke. The guests this year are Lady Mondegreen and Mike Richards and you know a rollicking time will be had by all.

So, naturally, around this time of year I get nostalgic for the one year I was at the UK filkcon, when Urban Tapestry was invited to guest at Didgeri Douze, the UK filkcon in Milton Keynes back in 2000. It was my first trip to England, my first trip overseas, my first chance to meet many of the British and German filkers I now treasure as friends. It was an amazing con with so many memories- Dan Bennett playing the Doctor Who theme on the accordian, Chris Conway playing jazz piano Star Trek themes in the lobby, concerts by Dan and Paul, Talis (with accompaniment by Simon), Just Playin' Folk, Lawrence Dean, Patchwork, Brian, Dave Clement, nMC, Taking The Mike, a very cool assortment at the main concert, hearing Erica Neely for the first time, hearing filksongs in German for the first time, Annie's "World's Too Big", having so many cool English filkers (and Dave Clement!) guest in our concert, the ROCKIN' Phoenix concert, the 10am UT Children's Concert (still one of the -best- children's concerts we've ever done, thanks to the audience :)), making cross-stitch UT sweatshirts for both Lissa -and- Annie, singing "Sam's Song" with Zander at the closing ceremonies, Phil's "Precious Moments".

OK, my memory isn't quite -that- good :), so I'm glad UT wrote a detailed con report when we came back home :). Those good times still come back vividly when I read through our ramblings!

When I came home from England I made myself a lengthy travel scrapbook, not only of the filkcon, but also of my visiting and siteseeing in London and Windsor after the convention. I'm going to share some of those pages beyond the cut here. I've only posted the London scrapbook pages because I'm quite sure that most of the photography is mine, or at worst Debbie's, who will hopefully forgive me if I don't credit her individual photos. I foolishly didn't document who gave me each photo in my scrapbook, which is why I haven't posted the convention scrapbook pages- I would want to credit the photographers and ask permission to post their photos before showing those pages.

And as the the party revs up in Basingstoke those of us here in Ontario wait with great anticipation for the British filk invasion which will be descending on Toronto in two months' time! The Guests of Honour at FilKONtario this year is the UK's own n'Early Music Consort, a filk choir of sixteen plus members! Yay for many, many British filkers visiting Canada!! I can't wait.
