Friday Five
Hey, this is the first time I've done a Friday Five :).
1. What was your most memorable moment from the last week?
Listening to Karen Linsley sing "The Pioneers of Mars" at the Space Exploration filk at Ad Astra. I was running the filk track and she was in the audience so I invited her up spontaneously to sing "I Am Stardust". When the circle came around to her again she said she wanted to sing "Pioneers of Mars". She told the story of the song to the audience, how she and Lloyd had written it and entered it in the Mars Society contest, how they became finalists, how Lloyd died so suddenly just days before the competition, how going on with that performance was the hardest thing she'd ever done, how they won the competition. She said this was the first time she'd sung the song since that night. I cried all through her performance, it was wonderful.
2. What one person touched your life this week?
Besides Karen, I'll add Donna Maloney. Donna is a wonderful costumer from Buffalo who I first met through the Tolkien boards and when we had brunch together last Saturday she offered out of the blue to make me a gown to wear when Urban Tapestry sings at "The Gathering" next December. I waited for the other shoe to drop- that it would only cost me $400-$500, but Donna says she'll do it just for the cost of materials. I am overwhelmed by her generosity, being that we haven't know each other that long. I tried on a few of her gowns at the convention and we found the design that flattered me best (Galadriel's dress from the mirror scene in FOTR) and we'll be getting together in April to buy material and trim. The dress will likely be green velvet. The other way Donna touched my life with that offer is that I am more determined than ever to exercise and lose weight to be worthy of that dress by December :).
3. How have you helped someone this week?
Due to her tendinitis, I accompanied Karen on guitar on all the songs she sang at Ad Astra. I was very happy to do it and really thrilled to see her singing in the local community again. We're going to do the same thing at FKO this weekend.
4. What one thing do you need to get done by this time next week?
Unpack and sort the apartment as much as possible now that all the commitments of March are done. Walk at least another 13 miles on my "Walk to Rivendell" challenge. Do a weights routine three times.
5. What one thing will you do over the next seven days to make your world a better place?
My world? Definitely unpacking and sorting the apartment. I'm getting really tired of tripping over stuff and not being able to find things.
