My Big Fat Greek Lunch
We had a Greek Lunch in my class today to celebrate the end of our unit on Ancient Greece. It was something I'd never tried before, but it worked out really well. About two weeks back I sent a list of different Greek foods/ingredients home with the students and had their parents circle what they'd be willing to bring in. Once I got the lists back I sorted them all and then told each student what they were responsible for bringing in. We planned on a meal of Greek salads, pita sandwiches, juice and dessert.
All the kids brought in their contributions today and I split them up into four groups to make big bowls of salad. They made a Greek dressing with olive oil, lemon juice, oregano, salt and pepper. They tore up their own heads of lettuce to add to the dressing, as well as adding tomatoes and cucumbers. Once the salads were on their plates we also had sliced olives and feta cheese to sprinkle on top. We also set up a pita buffet with chicken, tzieke sauce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and feta cheese to stuff inside the pitas. My two Greek students also brought in Greek specialties, a yummy flaky cheese pie and delicious dessert balls dripping with honey.
Greek music added atmosphere and there was lots of activity and excitement as the students made and ate their lunches. Even the clean-up wasn't too painful and I still got to my Choir practice on time.
A very cool activity. It definitely goes on my list to do again next year.
