Columbia

How very terrible. And to think it was only three days ago that I was reading all your tributes to the anniversary of Challenger.

John and I first heard the news of Columbia on the radio when we were in the van going to shop for groceries. We both turned to each other to verify we heard what we did, not able to believe it. John's first question was, "Is this the anniversary of the Challenger disaster?". We both hoped we were having a "War of the Worlds" moment and that we were actually hearing old broadcasts from back then.

We turned on CNN as soon as we got home only to discover our hopes weren't true :(. I'll be watching CNN a lot today. Such a haunting reminder of that day back in 1986 when I sat rolled up in a quilt on the couch crying as they showed photos of the Challenger.

It's still shocking enough to take your breath away. My heart and prayers go out to the astronauts of Columbia and their families and the people of the U.S. and Israel.

I should go out walking and do some packing and mail some packages, as I had planned to do today, but right now all I want to do is go back to CNN.

My heart is with all of you today, too, as I read your emotional LJ entries.

Edit: I've added a photo today of a cross-stitch I did of a space shuttle some years ago. Perhaps it's time that I ironed it and got it framed.
