Gift From the Prime Minister
My class got a cool package at school today. My Gr. 5's did a unit on government and elections back in November and one assignment I gave them was to write a letter to Paul Martin, the Prime Minister of Canada. Once their letters and drawings were done I bundled them into an envelope and sent them to Parliament Hill, thinking we might get a form letter back at some point. Over time I forgot about the project.
Today there was a package in my school mailbox addressed from Parliament Hill in Ottawa. In the package there was a letter from a government official writing on behalf of Paul Martin and thanking the kids for their letters and ideas for the Prime Minister. There was also an autographed photo of the PM to put up in our classroom and an envelope of Canadian flag pins, one for each student.
Now, I recognize that Paul Martin's PR department sends out hundreds of such packages to schools each year, but it's the first time I had ever received one of them and the students were really excited to receive a response and a gift from their Prime Minister. It made for a nice classroom moment.
I passed the signed photo of the Prime Minister around for the students to see and I was amused by their comments. "He doesn't look happy, Mrs. Durno.", one girl commented. "He seems to be grimacing.", another boy said. Another girl observed, "I think he looks scared.".
Hee hee. I guess if I was Prime Minister I'd be scared, too :).
